I Used an iPad Pro As My Computer for 1500 days, Here’s What I’ve Learned

I have the iPad Pro 12.9 the new one i use it for home and for work I’m a nurse and u love it I’ve been using iPad Pros every since they’ve came out i only pull out my laptop when i have to and since apple has updated its been over a year since I’ve used my laptop

I absolutely love my iPad. Mine is a 2021 11” iPad Pro with the magic keyboard and the apple pencil 2. I had a 2016 11” MacBook Air before, and for the last 2 and half years Ive been using the iPad daily for work. I am a private English teacher and I teach both in person and remotely. I am also a photographer and I simply love editing photos with the iPad. Recently I bought a 15” MacBook Air, but I still prefer the iPad. I want to upgrade to a 12.9” with 1Tb of storage, and I hope the next generation comes with an OLED screen!

iPad Pro is boring in my opinion as a MacBook Pro user. Why would I need a touchscreen and a pencil when the keyboard and the trackpad (mouse control) are well in place? With all due respect iPads are just unprofessional in real productivity, unless you make a career from drawing/illustrating or whatsoever. Back in the days when entry-level MacBooks use low-power Intel processors, MacBooks lack performance, efficiency, graphics, media engine, and 120Hz smoother display. Now MacBook Pros get superior Apple Silicon, more expansive 120Hz XDR displays, more immersive speakers and even better battery life. It turns out that iPad Pros were just a testing ground for Apple Silicon and now they are lackluster, begging for 'productivity' features passed down from macOS. Your next computer still needs to be a Mac or PC.

I am hoping this year Apple lets external camera support be true external camera support. The iPad Pro is my favorite device I have. It can do so much more than people think.

Since I bought my 2021 M1 11” iPad Pro I haven’t used my MacBook Pro much. It handles all the things I throw at it with ease. Especially when paired with a Smart Folio keyboard and pencil.
Using Lightroom for my photo’s and even being able to connect my camera directly to the iPad Pro blows my mind. 🐬

Had an Ipad Pro for 3 years. Always hated doing anything else than watching netflix. Sold it and bought a MacBookAir M2 (nearly same prize, size and weight) and am so happy with that decision.

what microphone type are you using

In terms of productivity iOS on an iPad Pro 11 is just too slow and not so easy to use - switching windows, organising windows on the screen, weird mouse feeling. That is why I mainly use my Mac Mini 2 Pro and use iPad for not taking, video consumption, writing etc. Both devices are great but the MacOS is a killer. Especially for multitasking.

Do you have solutions for citing software such as EndNote to be used at Microsoft Word on iPad Pro. My wife is writing thesis, but it seems that this cite while you write (CWYW) only supported on Mac but not on iPad. let me know if you guys have solutions on this

This is gold. You can tell why you use it, when others could have the same experience and when not. Really a rare review.

Here’s something I learned about my iPad Pro in about a week, not to mention 1500 days, I can’t plug an external mic into it and use the video at the same time. The connection is there, things fit, but I can’t choose the external mic and video source separately. 😢 I can’t believe Apple doesn’t allow this. It’s not like it can’t handle an external mic and record or stream video at the same time. The power is there but software is lacking.

We have to be close to the end for the MacBook. With just a few software tweaks and a handful of apps developed, the iPad should fully replace all laptops in the Apple lineup. No need to make a touchscreen MacBook. Just drop the MacBook altogether when iPad is ready. It will essential turn into a mobile iMac, wait, maybe iPad should just be renamed iMac, while iMac returns to being classically named Macintosh or Mac.

some Excel functions limitation is still there on iPad version where Microsoft seems don't really care to fix it

I had a 2011 iMac and the hard drive just took a crap. Apple and Best Buy wouldn’t work on it. Luckily my friend could get into it and save my files as I didn’t have em backed up to the cloud.
I went to Best Buy and they had an open box blue iMac in excellent condition for $1000 and an open box excellent condition iPad gen 10 in blue also for $300 (a sign)? Haha.
I figured I’d get both as I was really wanting an iPad to use mostly just to pay bills and use anywhere in house as my desk setup was in the basement.
After using the new iMac with the M3 chip it’s super super fast compared to the 2011 unit. The iPad is fun also and fast also. Now I’m just wondering if I really needed both purchases at the same time. If it was just me I feel the iPad is the way to go. But having a family and my wife and kids using it sometimes I feel I needed both.

Why iPad Pro 4 not supporting Netflix?

When I was in college, it was so beneficial to have an iPad Pro. Sure there were some things I couldn’t do, but then I would go to the computer lab. I was studying engineering so there were certain softwares that just weren’t geared for an iPad, or an Apple device in general. So even if I had bought a MacBook Air/pro, I likely would have ended up in a computer lab anyways. I thought the iPad was such a great tool to be able to do homework, take notes, easily turn in assignments, write essays, etc with. I would recommend an iPad to any student, I don’t think I would say the same for just any MacBook

I’m an engineer and I solely use the iPad Pro for work and leisure. I love it. Don’t really use it to edit any video, but if I had to, the iMovie app will surely suffice for my needs.

My M2 iPad Pro has been a MacBook replacement for me aka it’s my portable computing device to get things started however I have an M1 iMac for at home to finalize most projects. I require a Mac for development purposes but honestly I use the iPad more than my iMac on most occasions. iPad desperately needs a font book that supports .otf format. I personally can’t use an iPad for everything but for most I have recommended it.

Im sure youve heard this before or similar but I think if the iPad functioned as just that in “tablet mode” and then when connected to the magic keyboard it turned more into a MacOS experience as in a full blown file system, having a REAL desktop and the option to download real full blown computer programs. Something kinda like Samsungs DexOS on their phones/tablets. IDK man to mean its a no brainer because this then can truly replace the laptop for most people.

I moved to an 11’ iPad Pro from 2020 when the newer form factor came out. I was super excited cause I had a way outdated desktop and a laptop from 2007 so I needed a refresh. I was bummed when just a few months after I invested heavily into the 2020 ipad then the newer M1 came out and a thicker Smart Folio case so I was pasted by return, but over all it has done an amazing job for about 2.5 years then I had some more complicated work where I had to get a M1 MacBook Air. I STILL use the iPad MORE than my laptop some days. I would love to upgrade but not unless something comes out that convinces me to upgrade. USB-C and the functionary its a great primary device.

I dont see it as a main machine but its great for on the go. With the logitech keyboard and external mouse i have no issues managing systems.

I have only used iPad up till 6 months ago, a 12.9 iPad Pro and iPad minis. I finally was able to get my dream MacBook Pro because I thought it would be so superior to my iPads, boy was I wrong lol. I use my iPad mini 6gen for mostly everything and my M1 12.9 for artistry and photography and I don’t really use my MacBook that often unless I’m using my Wacom drawing tablet.

Personally i use a ipad 9 with the logitech combo touch keyboard case and an apple pencil as my main laptop. For me its good enough for 99% of tasks. Other then gaming which i have a gaming pc for i just use the ipad. Ipad pro is overkill for the average user

Apple run by very stupid people since jobs gone.they have to make full macos ipad pro and smash the market.I have macbook pro ipad pro but same time had to buy surface too as ipad pro is tablet.its not full sugar product.

If watching videos, reading mail, painting etc are considered work for some people then iPad is the best but if you need to run full desktop apps it's a Trash.

Great recommendation. The M1 Macbook Air at $749 is a killer price. I highly recommend it too its such a bargain. You can also shell out another $150 to get a new designed Air. M2 Macbook Air for $899

Have been a iPad Pro+Magic Keyboard+Pencil user, since 2020. Trust me, I sold my laptop off after experiencing the iPad setup. You want to type, reply to emails? Do that with the Magic Keyboard. You want to sign documents? Apple Pencil is the answer. I have never thought that this little setup of mine would be so beneficial to me that I will completely ditch my MacBook. Can’t be more satisfied with the versatility this bring to the table.
