What was the motherboard platform for this comparison? the 5960x is x99, but for the 5800x3d? x570 platform is pciex4.0(x570, b550) vs pciex3.0 (x99). basically my question is for the x99 was pciex3.0 and for the amd was pcie4.0? and that small of a difference in 2k and 4k gaming between the two cpus (and pciex version)? - meaning really small. thx

X99 platform actually has a better cpu. Make a video with a 6950x max OC. Mine is 4.3 and 3.5 cache. It is still a monster even in 2024 and can load 3080ti 100% in 1080p easy.

I feel like the 7800x3d is about twice as good as 5960x in terms of performance/power draw ratio. It's crazy it took 8 and a half years to reach this point. More's law is practically irrelevant now.

I'm still rocking an Asus x99 R5E10 along with an i7-6950X @ 4.2 GHz, 128 GB DDR4, and x2 GTX 1080 Ti's in SLI since 2016. I kinda wish I would've made my big overkill purchase a couple months later when x299 was released due to many things such as the limiting DMI 2.0 on x99 versus DMI 3.0 on x299. I've been tinkering with modifying and flashing my own custom UEFI to access "hidden" features to extend the life of this machine.

I am long overdue for an upgrade and general overhaul of my system, but I'm not currently in a financial position to do so. Whatever platform I go with, it has to have at least 40 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

I thought about obtaining the Asus Pro WS W790E-Sage SE, but I have the feeling that I should wait for Intel's Emerald Rapids before upgrading. I decided to go overkill with a workstation build instead of HEDT. I also hope Nvidia comes out with a Displayport 2.1 GPU in their next generation.

The real hero is the 5960X i7 that barely has an overclock and is 10 years old in a few months. You guys understand that not only is it running against an entire decade newer, but its going up against v-cache niche specific built gaming technology in games, against a workstation dinosaur that today costs about 1/8th of the price....LOL Somehow this thing is running almost equal at realistic resolutions (4K) that basically all of us not pretending to be CSGO or MLG gaming 1080P is playing with. Without using 1080P the 5800X3D is 700% more cost and 15% average better performance. C'mon

Yep! 🙂Like before, older HEDT CPUs are underrated and overlooked. The very same story had already happened with the older LGA1366 Intel 6c/12t Xeons X5600 and W3600 CPUs (I used and OC'ed them for years). These LGA2011-3 5900X CPUs (far better than the old Xeons) can too be very easily OC'ed over 4.3Ghz, and are then very competitive today. At a point where these (once expensive) CPUs and X99 motherboards are now priced at a fraction of the equivalent modern new stuff, they become ideal for a budget build. Yet no one talks about it. I wish more people understood it and more YTB channels focused on this. A practical case where affordable and slightly older is a smart choice, and it's widely available (EBAY and etc). 👍Nice video!

I retired my 5960X this year (running at 4500MHz combined with ram in quad channel at 3200 MHz) and replaced it with a 7800X3D and honestly? It wasn't worth it... In the games I play, I didn't get a noticeable performance boost from this. The whole thing just cost me a lot of money and I have problems that I didn't have before (stuttering on the desktop and also in some games). Considering that there are 8 years between the CPUs, I am very disappointed.
I would have preferred to stay on X99 for another 1-2 years and then get a bigger performance boost.

I remember watching videos of these absurd gaming rigs with 3x 980 ti's and an overclocked 5960x, dreaming that one day I could build something with so much presence.

The X99 platform combined with the 980ti to 1080ti range represented actual money well spent upgrades with noticeable worthwhile performance Increases. But alas, we all wished we could buy the 5960x and 6950x, which at the time were over £1000.

I recently built my nostalgia dream PC when I unexpectedly managed to pick up an Asus Rampage V Edition 10 with a 6950x for £210.

It's old tech, but I was just as giddy turning It on for the first time as I was watching those videos on monstrous gaming rigs.

4.3ghz with a 3060ti and still kicking ass 👌

In 2015 when the 5960x came out, an 8 year old system of the same class cpu would have been a core2quad, which can barely run gta 5, the best optimized game from that year. in 2023 the 5960x is still perfectly fine even for new releases, as long as you temper your expectations. Tech has really slowed down in development, for better or worse depends on who you are.

I got the 5960x with a MSI X99S SLI Plus, paired with 32gb of ram in quad channel and nvme. The system is fast, but the cpu becomes very hot when overclocked beyond 4.2 GHz. From 4.3 you need an AIO to keep it under control and even like that during summer is better to keep it stock and undervolted, because it can raise the room's temperature pretty quick. And you need to overclock it, because to get close to the single core performance of the Ryzen 3000 series (Zen 2), the chip has to run @4.5. Like that it scores 500 and 5000 points in cpuz single core and multithreaded benchmark. At stock frequencies it's like having a cheap 8 cores Xeon E5 v3.
So beware, because depending on where you live the cpu can transform your room in an oven during summer days. My suggestion is to undervolt and overclock it. But, even like that, it stays too hot at high frequencies.
Better to sell the X99 system, if you don't use it stricly as a workstation, and build an AM4 system buying a used cpu. That's what I'm doing: I just bought a used Ryzen 5600X and a new MSI B550-A Pro for 240€ total and probably I will get most of this money back selling my old mobo and cpu. Later I will update to a Ryzen 7/9, when I'll find a good price. Even a 5950X would be cooler than the old core i7 Extreme chips. 😄
