You forgot to mention Melvyn Douglas and Raymond Massey. Douglas won the Oscar for both HUD and Being There; and was in the Horror Film The Changeling with George C. Scott.
Massey is best known for playing Lincoln and being on Dr. Kildare. He was in the Horror Film of sorts, Arsenic & Old Lace, with Cary Grant.
It is surreal to see Douglas, Stewart, Douglas and Massey set the stereotype (to be copied in every horror film to the present) of the hip youngsters entering a horrific place they have no business being.
Rebecca Femm is a standout for me. Such a delightfully horrid creature. Having a character be not only a religious fanatic, but also deaf was brilliant. A person both unable and unwilling to hear you... but only too eager to fill your own ears with her bitter poison.
ОтветитьI only remembered this review because of the "Have a potato" line.
ОтветитьHave a potato!
Ответитьthis film belongs on the stage ,I go and see it
ОтветитьThey also had roast beef for din din.
ОтветитьGin, it’s my only weakness.
Ответить🤘💜
ОтветитьThis somewhat shallow review neglects to mention how laugh-out-loud funny much of the movie is (not just Thesiger), how beautifully it's filmed and how cleverly it's written. It's quite simply one of the best films ever made.
ОтветитьI literally just finished watching this last night
ОтветитьI need these oldies in a collection.
ОтветитьI do not drink...GIN.
ОтветитьDoes anyone else think that Jeremy Irons looks a lot like Boris Karloff?
We as humanity need a remake of the classic Mummy with Irons playing Imhoteph.
Old punk band from Seattle called The Accused used a clip from this movie to start their cover of Devil Woman.
ОтветитьWhy are there only 70 comments?
ОтветитьWatched it last week.Great movie
ОтветитьAs I recall the mother was a raving religious nut and there's a frequent suggestion of religious oppression contributing to the insanity of the household. This and the eccentric humor would be something that James Whale would naturally gravitate to. I think it's part of the idea that we create our own Hell. Surprised you didn't remark on this since it struck me as pretty obvious.
ОтветитьThis is a classic even though it wasn't lauded in its day and many today still think that a bunch of people sitting around most of the night talking couldn't be any good... but the dialogue is so intriguing!
ОтветитьI don't understand how this can be uploaded with clips and be monetized yet he still can't do any movie reviews with clips nowadays or for Monster Madness X.
ОтветитьI swear Saul the Maniac looks like an unshaven Andrew Scott from Sherlock.
ОтветитьThere's another movie with the same name from the 60s and it has NOTHING to do with the original that I know of. For one thing in it, there's a guy with a Noah's Ark replica in the backyard.
ОтветитьThanks a lot for this review. I didn´t know the movie and it became one of my favorites
ОтветитьJames, how about checking out the remake from the 1960s? It's a bit weird; it starts with a guy delivering an American car to the Femm household in Britain, there's a recreation of Noah's Ark in the back yard and it involves murder of the family members and a bunch of bombs. I'd almost say it's a bit forgettable but I remembered it years later even though I saw it when I was 5 or so.
Ответитьwow gloria stuart from titanic was absolutely gorgeous
ОтветитьThis movie review (I haven't seen this movie) reminded me of one I watched part of when I was a little kid. Some people go to a house for some reason, and the people that live there had the body of their deceased son locked in a room. Was 14 when he died, or had been in there 14 years (not even sure on 14). One of the visitors hears noises from behind the door, and later they open the door to find no body and scratch marks on the inside of the door. Wiring on car engine ends up ripped up, and then there is a glimpse of a dark figure moving away through the brush. Dark and raining of course. It was in color. All I remember.
ОтветитьDefinitely am awesome movie classic!!
ОтветитьI am SO stoked that you're doing movie reviews now. And you're doing a bunch from my favorite eras, so this is really incredible!
ОтветитьBORRIS KARLOFF WAS WASTED IN THIS FILM
ОтветитьBoris Karloff and Christopher Lee look pretty similar.
ОтветитьI agree this film is the definitive "old dark house" film. It has an impressive cast for its time, a great director in James Whale (after Frankenstein's success), amazing set designs and a genuine creepy atmosphere throughout.
Ответить1932?? it's one of the firsts talkies... yet is better than many movies decades later...
ОтветитьJames should review metropolis from 1927
ОтветитьDamn. How old is movies industries anyway?
Ответить'The Red House' is another under appreciated classic I recommend giving a view, as well!
ОтветитьI don't get it. Why is James showing all these old Monster Madness clips? What about original 2015 material for Monster Madness?
ОтветитьHave you guys seen "Martyrs"???
ОтветитьVery interesting film.
Ответитьthis actually looks creepy
ОтветитьI like the old ladies beard.
ОтветитьReview the Blob next or the Fly!
ОтветитьJames should review Freaks from 1932. I didn't find it that disturbing but I'd love to see a review on it.
ОтветитьMmm potatos...
ОтветитьI had an idea recently (unrelated to this video, though I wanted to tell about it somewhere), If the AVGN did a Sonic the Hedgehog retrospect. I'd like to see him react to the Sonic games nowadays compared to the ones of the past, see his thoughts on how Sonic has turned out in the past several years, knowing and having been through the earlier days of Sega and gaming in general.
I just though that would be interesting to see, and maybe even a retrospective on others games/series too.
Hey james, have you reviewed Wolfman (2010) if not, can you review it?
ОтветитьThat old lady had a full beard
Ответитьdoes anyone know what day it is? its back to the future day happy back to the future day mike
ОтветитьMike, I noticed that there was A Super Mario Bros 3 live stream available, but when I clicked on it all I got was an 'offline' screen, and afterwards I wasn't able to find it in any of the channels. Will it be up later? Thanks in advance, and greetings from Greece.
