I didn't mind skype. I was actually sad to see it go. But I did switch to Discord myself.

I never gave Skye a chance due to a little hype aversion and a lack of any real need for it. By the time I did have a need for teleconferencing, the backlash to Skype had reached the same pitch as the hype, and there were plenty of alternatives. I've tried all the alternatives and can't say that dislike any of them. I do like compartmentalization between my work (Teams), my school (Zoom) and my gaming (Discord), and never want for them to meet on one platform.

Teams is growing just because corporates are pushing it down our throats. Teams is a complete piece of garbage. Like...a total piece of garbage. I would rather use Yahoo Messenger than teams.

I used to use Skype on my desktop all the time back in 2008-2010 but then had no reason with a smart phone anymore. I honestly didn't know what"Zoom"was until the pandemic.

Who hates the incredibly confusing Teams interface? It's SO overcomplicated, while making functionality really hard to find or just poorly designed. This POS is only successful because it's part of Office and Windows.

I can't imagine what technology that Skype had that Microsoft couldn't have developed from scratch for far, far less than $8B. And they already had Lync! It was a terrible acquisition.

My biggest gripe about teams is you cannot share a file with different people in different chats easily. It seems forcing to use the same copy of the file to share with everyone.. I dont need that enforcement. I take a screenshot image share it with few guys and I dont need it later. However what happens is after the first time sharing, when I try to attach the same screenshot image file to another person, teams will simply refuse, no message, nothing, you keep trying to attach the file, it will simply ignore it.

My biggest issue with Skype was how when you'd start a call, its quality would be fantastic, but as it progressed the quality would drop and drop with no other way of fixing it but to restart the call entirely, which was a pain for group chats.

There are two major mistakes here: 1) Microsoft has not ditched consumer markets (B2B has always been the larger source of revenue) 2) the video mixes Skype and Skype for Business (formerly know as Lync). These were two separate services for different customer groups. Teams is the successor of the latter.

Also: Zoom did never innovate nor extend its features. It has been implemented and stayed as it was for years, still featuring a all but non-existent chat solution. Seems as if Zoom simply wanted to cash as much as possible without investing into the software.

As IT profesiaonal seeing these changes on the market from first row, I'm impressed by the precision of story line here. Skype for business is not yet dead and there's still some revenue for Microsoft coming from it. I even seen a company that is in using both Skype for Business and Teams at the same time (and letting employees decide which one) as some sort "Neverending" switch period.

There are two BIG points missing here:

Skype works very well until was acquired by Microsoft, in that point of time skype apps on mobile become awful, slow, bloated, they force to use microsoft account and destroy the simple interface for the ugly one slow and bloated. Linux support was kind of dropped since acquisition.

Teams is not a good software, I'm not sure why companies are using it, maybe is cheap (?), I use it in a daily basis because of my job, is slow, bloated, uses electron ergo uses a stupid amount of RAM.
Servers up-time and stability is one of the worst I ever seen: Calls without audio, or video, or rooms you cannot enter, problems with cross region connections, among other multiple connectivity issues.
Lack of features in all platforms, Linux client is ancient vs the rest, android client has reply function many months after the rest, web client las month was updated to be the same feature set as desktop.

I have been working online for over 14 years. I was an early adopter of Zoom, within their first 12 months. I currently use Skype. When I say I teach online Zoom and others launch their sales reps on me like I am a high school teacher. I don't do that. They have missed out on an entire area of professional teaching that pre-existed COVID. I don't make 30K, I make 400 to 500K just on the tutoring side of what I do. And I don't need classroom software or interactive whiteboards. I don't use a laptop with a Bamboo tablet, I use a $5k workstation with a Wacom Cintiq. None of the online meeting utilities effectively address those of us independently working outside the corporate or university environment pulling in 7 figures. They have no idea what we need. Only Skype works for this...not Teams...or any other. Is it a niche market? Sure. But much more lucrative than any other. Gamers, schools, and institutions are actually nothing. They are trivial. Zoom sucks, Teams sucks, for those of use outside the corporate and university environment. And we are legion. We were the gig economy before there was a gig economy. And I still don't pay for Skype! LOL! It's amazing how narrow the corporate mind can be even when infused with more youthful thinking about more modern ecosystems. Then can't even imagine reality. None of the other solutions actually approach being a solutions. If MS is smart, they will grow what Skype is, not Teams. COVID didn't weaken that, it strengthened it. Integration with MS products is nothing in my industry/business.

Microsoft kept tinkering with then UI. They removed useful features and called in an "enhancement". Microsoft is great at lip service ("we value your feedback"), but Skype became irrelevant when better software came along (from those that do listen to their users). Nowadays, who would ever use Skype to make a call?

I never hated old technology, rather I becomes sad if something I was using becomes old, unpopular and repressed by new, such: Messenger over Polish Gadu-Gadu, Discord/Teamspeak over Skype, Facebook over Polish Our Class and older MySpace, here only Tumblr is still working old social media website. If other people would stay using old technology, I would also stay, I used Windows Phone 7 and later 8, 8.1 and Mobile 10, and I'm very sad that this system development/maintenece was discontinued :(

We were early users of Skype and we were so impressed with how the Skype services saved us hundred of dollars of overseas phone bill every month when our overseas sales people wee calling their clients all over the world. For those with Skype accounts on both ends, the Skype call was even free. Charges only applied when you called a physical phone number.

I hate Teams. Thankfully, our organization uses Slack for all communication, and Teams - only for calendar meetings.
Skype itself was nice for the early to mid 2000s, but Facebook Messenger got it mortally wounded, with the other messaging apps people then used to flee Messenger (Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp) proceeding to deliver the coup de gras.
