Lyman is a city in the east of Ukraine, the centre of the Lyman community, and a major railway hub of the region. Lyman used to be a “tourist Mecca” for the people of Slobozhanshchyna. The Holubi (Blue) Lakes and the Sviati Hory (Holy Mountains) National Nature Park are located here. The tourist infrastructure had dozens of recreational complexes welcoming visitors. However, after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, everything changed.

In April 2014, illegal armed formations, with the support of Russian troops, captured Lyman. In June of the same year, having carried out a successful counteroffensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the city. In 2022, the Lyman again became one of the targets of the invaders. The city was under Russian occupation from May 23 to October 1, 2022.

During the expedition to the liberated settlements of eastern Ukraine, the Ukraїner team visited the Lyman community. We spoke with locals, who shared their memories of how the occupation began for them and what they had to go through when the "russkyi mir" invaded the city. We met the head of the local police department, Ihor Uhnivenko, and the Lyman Citizen Security Center director, Volodymyr Chumak. The men told us about the course of the battle for Lyman and showed the consequences of Russians occupying a city. Not a single building survived here. The occupiers destroyed or damaged all the residential buildings, administrative facilities, educational institutions, etc. The Russian invaders set up headquarters in the parental home of journalist and military officer Vitalii Ovcharenko. In this video, the man shared footage of the first time he saw his house after liberation and his impressions of his first trip to his home after de-occupation.

Despite all the challenges, residents of Lyman, with the support of volunteers from different parts of Ukraine, are bringing their city back to life step by step. They believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and are waiting for the complete liberation of the territory of Ukraine.
