Our first car, when we came from Cuba, was a 91 excel! It died a few years later with 58k miles. The transmission died. I was so excited when my mom bought it because I thought it was a Honda but nope it was not. 😂

I was a n high school when these came out in the US, and at first, they were kind and of a joke. They came very far in a very short time! I've worked in body and mechanical repair shops and the newer cars (early 00s and up) are well build! They do NOT want these things falling apart! You may give up a little bit in N/V/H, and the interiors don't always contain the highest quality materials, but they run! I work at a Honda dealership, but my daily driver is an '05 Elantra. The paint is in rough shape, and the interior is pretty worn, but I have over 230k on it, and it runs great! (KNOCKING ON WOOD! LOL)

they also had a rebadged version of the Ford Granada called the Grandeur. my parents have had 3 Hyundai cars over the past 20 years a 2003 Elantra a 2005 Sonata and a 2013 Azera the Sonata has been around since the 1985 model year so just before the Excel and they actually last pretty long my parents had their 05 Sonata for about 15 years until it was totaled in a road test by a Mechanics Apprentice and dad got the 20211 Cadillac SRX he drives now as a rental and after the City Of Boston accepts his retirement papers he's thinking of trading it in for a new Cadillac XT6. I personally have always loved Cadillacs as my now deceased maternal grandmother had a 1979 Coupe Deville when I was a youngster she traded the Caddy for a used Buick Skylark then traded the Skylark for a widebody 1990 Toyota Camry the later of which was Dark Pearl Red though in certain situations it looked Burgundy/Maroon. or for example when I came home from the Hospital as a newborn in my Dad's 1979 Corolla Station Wagon Gas was 91 cents a gallon for regular unleaded March 1985 so it cost 11.30 to fill his tank where as when we went to DC for Awesome Games Done Quick in January 2016 we rented a Cadillac ELR Coupe gas Was 2.14 a gallon for regular. the Sonata came here in 1989 in that model year it main competitor in its class the Toyota Camry sold 255,252 units in its 7th year on sale in the US and hit it's highest sales in it's 25th model year 2007 with 472.808 and still averages around 300,000 units a year sold in the US going into its 40th year

I still cannot comprehend why anyone buying a new car would think themselves “oh I’m gonna go spend $$$ on a Hyundai or Kia”

To me, they are still second-rate Asian cars.

Wow, that was quick! I asked for a video on the Scoupe last week and here it is!! Didn't realize they started in 1988, I thought my 1991 was the 1st year they were available. Mine was pretty reliable considering the beating I gave it, especially since most trips were under 5 miles, 3-4 times a day.

I worked at a Hyundai dealership back around 2010. What a pile of crap those car were. Subframe recall because they rusted out, control arm recall because they rusted out. Sun visor breaking off, crome door trim pealing off. They needed the 10 year power train warranty because of the crappy transmission's.

This brought back memories! My first car was a 3-door 1989 Excel that my mom had bought new in 1989 n I got in 2000 n it had over 400,000 (yes, 400k) miles on it n still ran. Sure, about half of the original 68 horses were probably dead or lame under the hood but it got me from point A to point B. In Arizona, with no A/C. LOL

HyundaiKia's unfair advantage is their perceived high quality. I've seen oil burners, shot engines, and very unhappy owners. Unfortunately, people are enticed into buying one because of heavy advertising of the practically useless 10yr 100k mile warranty.

1999 I bought a 1991 Hyundai Excel for $1 from a former coworker. It only had 1st gear. I found another transmission at a U Pull salvage yard and installed it myself then replaced the front lower ball joint’s. I had about $300 into it and sold it for $900. It had an EFI 1.6L Mitsubishi engine and I loved reving up that engine. It was a fun car to drive.
