My name is Shamay - and always, gets massacred! It's pronounced Shuh-May. I've been called Shammy, Charmay, shannay, Chimay, lol. I used to get upset about it, but as I've gotten older I just giggle and go with it. :D

Looking through the comments here, it's evident that the Irish don't know to spell. The names aren't odd, they're spelt wrong 🙂

In fairness Saoirse isn't the most difficult to pronounce or odd name for non-Irish english speakers to pronounce. None of the attempts were really that far off. It's much more fun trying to see foreigners try to pronounce names with 'mh' in them like Niamh, or Caoimhe, and then either argue that there's no 'v' in there, or that there's an 'm' in there ( or both ).

In Irish it is pronounced a bit differently depending on dialect. In Connemara the letter combo AOI is pronounced "ee" , in the south of Ireland it is more like the way she herself pronounces it. In the north (Donegal, etc.) it is more like the English word "air" All are correct actually.
Irish is a language that predates the Roman alphabet and so the Roman alphabet (our alphabet) is a little inadequate for the Irish language. Therefore the spellings sometimes make no sense in English, but there is a system to it, The spelling was revised in the 1950s and it's a bit easier for English speakers but it is still a bit of a mystery to English speakers.
