I think the gift of experiences is wonderful. I have been sent to the ballet as a gift many times, and I am always so happy to get that gift! Your suggestions are perfect!

We here are what would be considered a merchants nightmare these last 10..15 yr's as there is no spending anymore at Xmas except for food treats for ourselves and visitors. The biggest reward is the lack of stress and eliminating the financial drain.

I will put in a plug for Heifer Project International and other such like groups. They are a gift that keeps on giving. We have bought animals through them for people who we will never meet to help make their lives better.

I think one of the best minimalist gifts is an e reader. I have always enjoyed reading and I love paperback books. But books can become clutter. An e reader allows you to have a library of books in a very small space.

One year made a medicine cabinet box for my 85 year old mother and now every year send her items to fill it up again and home made jam or apple butter. She loves it and helps her out so much.

I think we buy landfillable junk because we can’t afford iPads. That said, the sad hard part is that by the time we realize what kind of a runaway train we are on, the expectations have already been embedded in our kids. Honestly I spent many many December’s just crying from the stress and knowing I’d be disappointing them. I wish this holiday could be done away with completely.

AMEN sister !! I have been trying to get my family to see that Christmas as a “deadline” creates this stressful season that it’s more of a relief to get it over with - not good . And your right about toxic toys and landfills.... very good points- all of them !!! Now a new puppy playing by the ( manageable) fireplace.... that looks like real joy : )

Saint Nicholas was a real person. And was the model for "Santa Claus" due to his tendency for secret gift giving. And today, December 6th, is Saint Nicolas day. The day that most Europeans celebrate and children receive gifts (not on Dec 25th, as in the USA, where many things are anyway over confused by commercialism).

In other words, "Santa Claus" is indeed real, but only if you put that term into proper historical perspective.

Beautiful thoughts and beautiful pictures. I think seniors like me would also appreciate gift cards to whatever local grocery would be nice. I know I would appreciate it. I did the experience thing with my son most of his life at home. I gave him a choice stuff or do something. He always picked doing something. Usually camping.

Our family got so big it became a financial burden to try and buy everyone a gift at Christmas so here’s what we do. Each family brings an empty basket to the host family’s house and we put a simple homemade goodie in each others basket. Each family goes home with a basket full of goodies. It’s so much fun to see what others have made. My father in law asks us to buy a chicken or share in a goat for farming start ups in Africa where he once lived. My parents live further away and have a limited income so they appreciate gift cards for gas, groceries, etc., things they need rather than “stuff” to clutter their small apartment. I love your idea of gifts of service. Blessings.

Sorry Ariel, I do respect your privacy, you just occasionally say something unusual about yourself(Like not growing up with Christmas or any holidays) and I get all curious.

Hi Ariel, I've just subscribed to your channel. I'm from Wales and speak Welsh. I'm delighted to see the name you gave your tiny house. Bendigedig - wonderful. I would like to pass on to you the correct pronunciation of 'Fy Nyth'. Fy - the letter F in Welsh is pronounced like the letter v in English. The y next to the f is pronounced like the letter u in cut. Fy is pronounced like the first syllable in the name Virginia or Vermont but don;r roll your 'r' The name Nyth is pronounced, neath. Like teeth but with an n in front. Best wishes to you. Dymunuadau gorau a phob lwc.

I agree so much! Too many gifts are destined for landfills. Some of my favorite gifts are home-made consumables... things like home canned jams and jellies, soups, salsa, and non-edibles too like soaps, etc. For folks I know that like it (like my folks) I usually gift good quality coffee beans, loose teas, and a bottle of wine when I cannot make home made gifts. And BTW your photography is stunning, I'll check it out more for sure! Nature photography is a big hobby of mine too and I lug my dSLR with me on all my hikes even my longer backpacking trips up the mountains but we simply don't have the variety of animals out east, so jealous!

I think what you may be indicating here is, "No one need be additionally slowed, straddled, or stifled by more syrupy-sweet soliloquies, emblazoned on striped, polka-dotted, edge-striated, stippled Pimpernel-patterned, diamond-nerl studded, stuffed stuff-stuffers, strewn-over, steamed-open, and 5G-streamed from stem to stern, causing an eventual stopped-up, stooped-over,
stigmatized condition to settle-in; with the result of solidified permanent damage or something seven times worse."

That path is superfluous, when it's easier to simplify in the beginning.

You sound like my Jehovah's Witness friends. They have a special day of giving where they give homemade gifts, or things like you mentioned. Many of us want to celebrate the birth of Christ, so the winter holiday was chosen, to represent that time. The gifts were supposed to represent the gifts of the 'Three Wise Men.' It is why we try to keep it simple and usually to 3. As a child, I could count on a homemade or simple toy, or game, some underwear/sox, and a homemade dress, coat, or other clothing. It has often become something much more, and is often distastefully overdone. Thank you for your insight, and for sharing your views. Much wisdom in your post.
