Loved Conan #24 - very disappointed with the Rune/Conan crossover. I got thoroughly into Barry's run on Conan in the early '70s at Marvel. In each issue his art got better and better until his masterpieces in Conan #20 and #24. Everything he did afterwards was a letdown. Way too much detail and lines leaving a very cluttered look. Just one mans opinion.
ОтветитьYou should talk about why you consider wolverine: the origin bad, the movie is bad that much is true.
ОтветитьI gotta admit in my teens I did not like BWS's artwork mostly because his male and female faces were very unnattractive only now into my mid-40's that I'm realizing what detail that was poured into every panel.
ОтветитьCouple years ago I picked all these Barry books run for $75, all 9.4 and above. The guy even sent them in mylar bags and heavy stock boards! Amazing art! His attitude about the industry reminds me of Alan Moore's critiques.
ОтветитьIt’s a shame that soon after it was published, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and Larry Hama immediately drained it to its bones.
ОтветитьThought his Wolvie was 30 years prior?
ОтветитьCan we stop this “ we shouldn’t know anything about anyone ever “ crap. That doesn’t make for good storytelling.
ОтветитьThis was the first graphic novel I ever bought when I was 14 in 1996. It's still one of the best ever written and illustrated. Berzerker rage!!!
ОтветитьBWS is overrated.
ОтветитьBeautifull book great writting and very atmospheric like aliens
Just read it from start to finish wilst listening to music and I gotta say I felt sad for Logan and nervous for everyone else, some moments were intense.
I was so immersed felt like I was one of the doctors in the room watching everything happen in front of my eyes and can even close my eyes and imagine myself in that labyrinth of a laboratory
Edit:grammar and adding more context
I have a weapon x comic but never realized it was Windsor-Smith’s artwork but I loved pouring over every detailed panel. Im gonna have to give it a re-read lol
ОтветитьWolverine has been my favourite superhero since I was a kid and first read X-Men in the 80s.
Wolverines run on MCP was fantastic and Barry Windsor-Smith's tale was the pinnacle of this. Utterly incredible. Its still one of the best Wolverine stories ever told
It's been more than a decade, maybe two, since I last read Weapon X. I got a spoiler from your video because I forgot the simulation part of the ending 😂 I always found Windsor-Smith interesting, and this video makes want to check out more of his work. You said it, seeing an artist grow, mature, and challenge himself is one of the best things about art.
ОтветитьAfter Kirby I could say that there are a few guys who reached the throne: Windsor, Neal Adams, Steranko, McFarlane and Jim Lee. The others copied the style of the ones I mentioned.
ОтветитьI thought the 'Origin' miniseries was amazing. Don't know why you implied that it was bad.
ОтветитьWeapon x is one of my favourite comics! That art is epic
ОтветитьHis criticism is 💯work for hire/part time contractor it’s 💯an excuse 2 denigrate & devalue workers all over
ОтветитьI always thought that there was lot of art Nouveau in his art
ОтветитьI have Iron Man issue 232 by Winsor in original printing and Italian printing. When I was a kid I didn't like his style, it's something I managed to appreciate later growing up as a young adult. Windsor was a major trend setter because he was able to see the whole story and the whole product, not just a few panels.
Ответитьyo tambien era muy fan. me gusto mucho weapon x y tenia tambien Rune
Ответитьimagine a 10 episode mini series of weapon x as a show id watch that in a heartbeat
ОтветитьHey Chris .... I'm enjoying catching up on all your podcasts while I'm stuck in bed with long-covid. I haven't really read any comics since I was a young child and my mom would buy a bag of Gold Key comics. It was mostly stuff like Scrooge McDuck.... however I do remember one superhero called Magnus Robot Fighter. I was fascinated by the vision of a dystopian future with a variety of robots everywhere.
ОтветитьJust a beautiful run. It was weird this awesome story and art were in Marvel Comics Presents. I feel like me and my brother were the only people that liked that book and it’s format.
ОтветитьThis was the first graphic novel I ever read it hooked me after I read it I’ve been collecting comics ever since
ОтветитьThe only thing that annoyed me about weapon x was when the ending shows wolverine cutting through the door to get to the professor and Cornelius, only to then abruptly cut to him running in the woods and them discussing what they'd done as if nothing has happened. Like, why show that?
ОтветитьI have this book. I used to spend hours just looking at the illustrations.
ОтветитьI love those issues of conan where he transitions to his unique style. Weapon X is an absolute masterpiece, even the coloring is uniquely amazing.
ОтветитьCan you do a video on Barry Windsor-Smith's Monsters?
ОтветитьI was young enough that the reveal of the simulation in weapon x blew my mind.
ОтветитьThreaded the needle, indeed. I was insanely fascinated by wolverine's past AFTER Weapon X.
ОтветитьI miss when western comics had such beautiful art work.
ОтветитьHe did the Wolverine Now its my turn panel from the Hellfire Club story, that's gotta be my favourite image of Wolverine ever
ОтветитьOh my god I remember this comic. It was one of those comics that as a kid I would constantly reread just to learn how things are drawn when I was learning how to draw
Ответитьthe carnage, there's no movie or animation that even get close to smiths creation
ОтветитьThanks for the reviews, I just ordered Monster and the collected Weapon X... can't wait!
ОтветитьGoing to buy weapon x
ОтветитьI love these artist highlights you do
ОтветитьONE OF MY FAVORITE COMICS GROWING UP IN THE 80'S!!!!!!!!!!! HAD A LOT OF THIS DUDES WORK BACK THEN. THIS IS WHY I'LL ALWAYS BE A HUGE WOLVERINE FAN.
ОтветитьI loved his work on Weapon X, that my man is my formative teenage years, it brings back so many memories, such a great story.
ОтветитьI feel like Barry Windsor-Smith draws the tops of his heads too small, like there isn't enough room for the brain in the skull. I see this a lot in Rune and Solar.
ОтветитьChris, have you thought of covering Rick Leonardi?
ОтветитьHis portrayal of Storm there is some of my favorite art in an X-book.
Also, mad at the sheer breadth of his art... didn't realize he was also responsible for classic Conan... it looks so different from his later work.
Listened to Rob Liefeld’s podcast episode where he was reading a BWS interview where he and the interviewer started opining about the comics industry. It was eye opening to say the least. It was also a perfect glimpse into what Marvel turned into, and what he thought of the mainstream comics artists at the time. If I recall, both he and the interviewer were also taking a figurative dump on Jack Kirby’s art.
I haven’t really followed his career after his out of place contributions to Wildstorm comics event. His female faces were consistently off putting because of the deep set eyes and large eyelids and long faces.
Just got a new fan.
Barry Windsor - Smith is a great talent.
When you said Eastham technical college and showed the photo I recognised it! Which was weird and unexpected on its own but then I googled him and he's from Forest Gate that's like 10 minutes from where I live, apparently he's lived in the states since before I was born so there's not much chance of me running into him 😂
ОтветитьPlease make a video on Robert crumb
ОтветитьKayfabe reference a the end? I watch those guys too.
Ответитьcan you make a video about Marvel handbooks and DC who's who?
ОтветитьI had been collecting anything Smith since the late 70s and I totally agree with you on all of it.
Ответить
