I highly doubt the validity of this information.
I am no expert in iPhones but screen ICs can contain information about their individual factory calibration in order to get accurate colors, that's pretty common in other products including laptops. I doubt this just a way for Apple to ruin 3rd party repairs, and there's no way it's just a serial number transfer, if they really wanted to prevent 3rd party repairs they would definitely be smarter than a silly useless serial number.
