Its a PC classic from the PC Golden era (1996-2002). Quake and Quake II are probably the games I have installed the most over the last 27 years and draw me back every few years, especially with the recent remasters. The community is still strong but not as strong as it was back then, sadly.

Just bought Quake 1 remastered, Quake 2 remastered and Duke Nukem 3d 20th anniversary edition all great. I finally get to enjoy Quake 1 and Quake 2 with the soundtracks intact and wow its fun.

I just discovered that zombies can be blown up with a shotgun on quad damage. There's only one case of that, though in the graveyard in episode 4. I forgot which map but yeah I'm proud of finding this out :)

Yea gibbing fiends and shamblers with the quad damage shotgun is something I actively seek out every time I play a quake mission lol

Quake is probably why I'm still a PC gamer in my 40s. As a kid, we got our 166mh PC and a shareware copy of Doom, and I thought it was the pinnacle of gaming, and that nothing would top it. Then my brother's friend brought over the demo of Quake. And I'll never forget how blown away by it I was.

Just realized that I've been watching this video for the past 24 minutes without paying any attention to what you're saying.

Episode 1: Dimension of the Doomed is the best episode in the game...and Ziggurat Vertigo (the secret level) is its best level.

Correction: Quake did not require a graphics card. The Diamond Monster 3d came out around a year after Quake, if I remember right, and Id put out GLQuake to support it. The main visual upgrades being transparent water and colored lighting. I remember for sure because I started before GLQuake and didn't get my hands on a graphics card for a few years. Game ran just fine on my Pentium 100. Also pretty sure Trent Reznor worked on the games sound effects too, not just the music.

Quake 2 is a fucking masterpiece!

At the time this game blew my mind. Doom was revolutionary, doom 2 way better, gory but Quake the next level, scary, and atmospheric, NIN music, the quad nail gun, secrets were hard. JUMP button, mouse look, quad damage
I had to hook two 386 cpu's together to run doom 2 and it was 10 minutes to load, make a sandwich, eat it, have a smoke almost there

Hexen was good, Blood was twisted and fun and all the fps since ,Quake is still one of my favorite games. Doom 2 too. Im old as dirt

I think Civvie covered Quake 2 and 4 along with some of the problems people have with them really well. It wasn't just not liking something for it being different it was a good dive into how the games played and what the production was and how they effected the industry in both positive and negative ways.

I remember being excited for my AGP x16 graphics card. At the time I didnt know who the manufacturer was but I knew it was a beefy 16mb card... hell yeah went well with my Creative Labs sound card
