85mm is the best focal length and my reason for the love of photography! I thought you’d go with 50 but when you said 85mm is the best focal length, I started fist pumping the air.

Although I do love 35s and 80s I hate 28 though For me, it’s a spot where it’s not quite zoomed in enough, but it’s not quite wide enough

24 or 28mm with a 50mm is my favorite small prime combo with a MFT body...I've tried and tried to get used to 35mm and can't. I find even using a zoom in this range the majority of my shots fall around the 24 or 50mm range. When I need portraits 85mm is definitely a favorite. Even cheap 85mm's are generally sharp and the length is long enough to get great subject separation but not so long that I need to stand super far away if I need to get the full body in frame. Have to agree with Chris on this one!

This is my favorite video of all you've ever done.
And for my APS-C I got a combo of fast 85 and 35mm primes and vesatile Tamron 18-300, so basically I'm all set.

Fact is 1mm is best because it has the largest field of view and you can tell a much longer and interesting story the more you can fit in the frame.

My favourite is 85mm Prime. Because to me, I believe we should be an observer, not a influencer when shooting images. If I use 35mm lens I need to stand way too close to the story, and people inside the frame are gonna at least notice me, some even behaviour differently, some are gonna be curious what camera I am using by staring at it (of course if you are talking about shooting models or people that intentially looks at the camera that is a different story).
By using a 85mm lens I can take (almost) the same shot in distance, which allows me to walk away from the story I want to shoot. That is extremely important to me. everytime I pickup a 85mm I feel that I am just an observer and I can capture the moment without altering its original timeline.

Oh man, that was unbelievably brilliant!!!! What a fun video to watch. I'm looking for one lens currently and I'm going to go for a 40mm. I think that's a nice middle ground between not as tight as a 50mm and not too close to a 35mm (which I'd class as the first step towards a wide angle).

Funny, my field of vision is close to 18-20mm. But after stroke I found out that my affects eye (left eye) focal length has decreased to 25-28mm range. Right eye is still the same though.
So for me, the greatest focal length would be 18 or 20mm.

I have to say, my favourite FF focal length is 65mm. A bit of an odd choice but I really enjoy the compression you can get, where it's a bit closer to an 85mm, but at a slightly wider angle closer to a 50mm. Great for 2 shots. I was very excited when Sigma announced their 65mm Cine T1.5, and I hope they will bring an AF, affordable version to Sony E or Canon EF soon. Would be nice if it had a good MFD too. Fantastic show, glad to see you guys over on Petapixel. I'm very much enjoying this more comedic style as the channel draws to a close.

Definitely disagree on the 135 mm. It's too long for most people to easily hand hold, and getting one that is actually fast means a huge, heavy, and extremely expensive lens.100-105 mm is better.

Ответить
@gcvrsa
@gcvrsa - 02.05.2023 21:55

I went into this knowing that the "right" answer is always going to be one of three choices: 1) a "normal" focal length that approximates the human field of vision, say 45-60 mm, 2) a moderately wide-angle focal length, say 28-35 mm, or 3) a moderately telephoto focal length, say 85-105 mm. The reasons these are the "best" choices should be fairly obvious. The "normal" lens shows the world as we naturally see it. The moderate telephoto shows what our brains naturally concentrate upon in the center of our visual field. The moderate wide-angle allows us to see more context than what our eyes would normally see, without overtly distorting the perspective. Any one of these is the "best", and all of them are the "best". It's no coincidence that these are the three prime lenses most photojournalists would choose to carry, and did choose to carry in the days before fast, accurate zooms were commonly available.

85mm NOPE wrong -- it maybe a good focal length for shooting portraits and headshots of pretty young subjects, but it is useless when shooting wildlife action in the field or sports. The "best focal length" for this is the 400mm -- oh 600mm -- or the Nikkor Z 400/2.8 TC, which is a two-for-one solution a 400/2.8 and 560/4.0 in one lens. But then there is the 600/4.0 TC which is also a two-for-one - being a 600/4 and 840/5.6 in one and ideal for shooting cheetah actions and birds of all sizes. AND so on......
