TBH I think a lot of the differences people are noting come from a) the Prophet being a little louder, as you mentioned; b) having a little more high end (various people calling it “crisp” “sizzle”, “depth” on chimes, etc). Makes me wonder if a little high-end boost EQ on the 6 would close the gap even further!

you can use the vintage knob in another position than maximum, and it can be magical, not just ridiculous.

Is the track at the end available anywhere?

The low end of the prophet is much nicer but in the pads and upper end I'm extremely impressed a digital synth can get there.

I'm really considering the Super 6, and this has made me lean towards it even more. I'm looking to upgrade my synth setup, and I want to make the right decisions on what I get. There's a lot of great machines on the market, but some of the prices make me indecisive. I want to streamline my setup, to cut down on clutter. For a while I was just buying mid tier gear, and it started to stack up. I would like to get a setup that allows me to replace multiple synths with a few. I even considered a Moog One 16, but I'm starting to lean away from it. The Iridium, Virus TI2, and Super 6, are 3 that I'm very interested in. I'm just not sure about what flagship analog or two to get. I'm not sure if I should just get some of the more affordable Sequential Modules, or if I should get a Pro 10, Pro 6, Pro 5, OB-X8, OB-6, Trigon 6, Matriarch, Sub 37, etc... I plan on investing about 20k over the next year. My genres of music are Ambient Soundscapes to LoFi/Boom Bap hip hop. I really like imperfections and organized chaos/randomness. I own some pedals that can make up for imperfection, but I want machines that can add some wobble if I want it. I know the Prophets and Oberheims are fully capable of this. I own multiple synths already, but my most premium is a Hydrasynth 49. I also own a bunch of samplers like the MPC Live 2, 2022 OLED Deluge, Organelle M, and other things. I'm trying to get all of my gear streamlined, and making sense. I just don't have any good gear stores around me. Guitar Center is the best one, and they don't really have anything that I'm looking for, so I'm depending on the internet to make my decisions. Which is pretty lame, especially due to the synth supremacists on places like Reddit. You would think that everyone on r/synthesizer has million dollar setups, due to how elite they act. I thought I was talking to Mike Dean the other day, due to the elitist vibes I was getting.

You know, I just want to say you are one of the only people that demos synths that seems to care about diving deeply into FM. I really appreciate it as FM is often a defining feature for my interest in a synth.

For nearly every classic analog sounding patch, I preferred the Prophet sound.... it was always just a tad more juicy. HOWEVER..... the UDO can do so many more digital-like tones that the Prophet could never do. It's really a win-win for either synth. They are both amazing! Right now the UDU is at the top of my wish list. Go see Matt Johnson Jamiroquai's demos with it.

Close comparison in sound. The P5 seems tighter in tuning or something which may track better. Surprised how close they are. I wonder if I could get the Korg Minilogue XD's (2 slaved for 8 voices) to match? I find that when you exactly match volumes you are halfway there. I suspect there would be a wideness that would be hard to macth.

You also are paying for the sickest looking wood case with the p5-10. Do you want something that looks like a behringer or like a classic synth? Don’t lie…it’s not all about the sound! I had a p10 and returned it for the 5 (before they updated :/ ). So then I sold my p5 and I’m saving up for the p10 again. The best part about it was the look and feel. Those big knobs and big keybed! Also sounds sick and also no point in built in effect these days when you can get super amazing pedals and or plug ins. My p10 was going through my empress delay system and it was the shit.

Great comparison now that I finally got round to watching it. Some understandably feel a certain way about Sequential, Oberheim, Moog, even Waldorf. The OB-X8 certainly makes Sequential pricing seem less crazy, but I still personally think a gently used Pro 3 for around $1.5k is their only model that makes sense with the alternatives available and even then a new SE-3X would get my money before it. (Or any analog mono really) As you have somewhat stated here and there - Polybrute.

P5 is furniture and more desirable.

Udo 6 WOW! I’d go for that instead. The sound is going to be a classic. Now let’s see if the 5 could do udo 6 sounds. Wait...

Would you say these two have too much overlap to have both or would be better off with a Prophet and something from Waldorf instead like and M or Iridium?

Ok this has convinced me to get the Super 6 over the Prophet 5/10! I just wanted a fully analog VCO-based poly so bad but the possibilities and flexibility of the Super 6 just kept bringing me back to it. But now I know I won't have to miss those Prophet style tones if I get one! Oh and as a side note, I ended up reading in the Super 6 manual that the slop or "drift" mode as they call it actually does affect the envelopes, filters, and LFO's as well as the tuning and phase of the oscillators so I believe it does indeed work like the Prophet 5 vintage knob.

Excellent. I fund it near impossible to de-construct a Super 6 patch. It's easy enough to make a new patch or modify a pre-set of course. I actually write down new patches on paper!!

UDO Super-6 is like a true analog diamond 💎 it shines and sparkle and has a unique style of sound.
The p5 is very limited and dry sounding at most parts of the comparison

The Prophet generally sounds fizzier to my ears, the tuning isnt exactly matched in some places too which can make things sound different.

Hey Starsky - love these videos. This one convinced me I don't need a Prophet 😀 If you produce a 'Prophet' pack for the S6 I think a lot of people would be interested.
Others synths on my wishlist include the OB-6/OB-Xa and CS-80 (I think Mr B may get my money for the DS-80 as and when). Would love to see how the S6 compares to those. You may just spare my wallet, my credit card, my over-crowded studio and my relationship! 😀

Wow S6! Was never intented to mimic a P5, however it's so damn close. One of the most versatile synth of these days.

I have the Super6 and Rev2, but I had no idea the S6 did such a good Prophet 5 imitation. Somehow the mob seemed to call this one because I get questions about S6 vs Rev2 all the time, in fact I don't think anyone I've talked to has asked me to compare it to something else. Get that Prophet or OB-6 comparison ready because apparently the S6 is getting pan spread in the next firmware - for non-binaural 12-voice mode is my guess, though pan spread in binaural might do interesting things who knows.

I did mimic a DP lead from Rolling and Scratching last night on accident, which was nice. Had the S6 9 months now and I feel like I'm just now getting good with it. Hopefully going to record a patch demo with it this week of what I've made in that time, only 15 patches though. Really ought to make a 16th so it's at least two banks.

Super 6 more plastic and tame sound, more voices, more control and (binaural) stereo.
Prophet 5 more organic and rich sound, less voices, less control and mono.

I prefer the Prophet 5.

Both sound great. I think the 5 edges it but not by much.
