Real question, can you do it with casio calculators? As i grew up in Europe I never used any TI calculators, only ever used Casio ones, and when I see the prices (high) and capabilities (low) of the TI ones, I always go running back to the casio ones...

What a cool project! I really like the way it turned out and I can empathise a lot with the USB debugging process... Will have to give it a try on my calculator later. 🙂
When extending numbers (e.g. from 7-bit to 14-bit) I find repeating bit patterns works nicely, so in this case just sending the same 7-bit value twice. My M-Audio controller does this and sounds OK, though my Yamaha only has around five bits of effective resolution and you can hear it stepping through pitches if you extend the pitch bend range to an octave (no Blade Runner/CS-80-style bends, sadly). Good you found a use for the full range, though!
There is a MIDI CC (64) for sustain rather than implementing it manually, for what it's worth. Will have to have a play with this, thanks for sharing the project and the development process. Really cool work!

To be fair, having the chromatic notes (half step notes) in that position isn't a bad idea at all; it's just as though they've been shifted over a short distance horizontally from where they normally would be (of course, something like a computer keyboard is better suited, just because of the layout, but I think your compromise is a good one). You'll probably get used to it really quickly if you haven't already. Anyway; love the ideas on this, I was really wondering how the hell you were going to map the physical keyboard in a way that could be practical.

That is so cool! I would normally direct you to the book "USB Complete", but it looks like you've already got USB covered.
