Hello Andy. Great video. However, I am not that computer savvy and need to decrypt a drive that was locked without my knowledge or initiation. I have made several attempts to have Microsoft help, but, they simply give the same standard answers why they CAN"T help. I think this is absolute BULL. If you wrote the program, you have a solution to a situation like mine.
The ironic thing is I placed my files on an external drive just in case I had a computer glitch. All the information on the drive has YEARS of work and data vital to my business. Knowing Microsoft is NOT going to offer any help, I have to look for a solution where I can bypass the encryption on my own. I cannot lose the data and work on this drive. So wiping the drive is NOT an option.
What solution do you suggest? I would appreciate assistance with this situation. I am a strict believer there is a solution to any problem. In this case, I don't have the expertise to overcome it.
Thanks for your time and possible assistance.

What is with an 20-character Pin? And when the pc is shutdown. Can you still get the recoverkey with forensic tools? The problem is, some people who are not real law-enforcement, they are self indepentend in my country (germany), they work for the goverment but also for the private sector. So when someone steals my laptop who is encrypted with Bitlocker and an Pim and there is some Forensiv-Tool what can unlock it, then nothing is safe? Is Veracrypt safe?

i had 1040s irs files in my bitlocker. For a week or two pop-ups asked me to open my bitlocker. two or three times a week , which i ignored. then it stopped and a week later i got curious and opened my bitlocker. The files were gone and 5-6 files of "Wipe Out" a video game show of kids jumping across a pool to win prizes. I deleted those and a month or two later the IRS sent a letter from Fresno, CA office that something was up. Then another IRS letter from Atlanta,GA same note about some document i was said to have sent them. Well, no other letters from IRS. It must have been an attempt to file my taxes and get my refund.

Am I missing something?

We're saying that an attacker with access to a powered on, fully decrypted laptop can access the bitlocker recovery key?

If an attacker has access to a decrypted laptop it's game over anyway right?
Why make life harder for yourself by encrypting it again... only to decrypt it?

If you have sufficient access to pull an image of the disk and the ram you'd be able to just dump any sensitive files.

I tore-down my sister's laptop because it died and took out SSD(M2) out of it (long story here) because she needed the info in there for her MD. However, it was locked by bitlocker when I tried to access the files in it. She didn't know that she had to backup the recovery key and all so I have no idea what to do. You got converted VHD file in the video and I want to know how that was made so that I can try this method on her drive. Not an IT person at all...just trying to figure out what I can do..

Is it possible to get the Bitlocker key from a PC that had it's motherboard changed? Dell had bitlocker enabled when I bought it. I had no idea. Dell says it is a Microsoft problem. Microsoft says it's a Dell problem. I have 3 years of data I do not want to lose. I can disconnect the drives from the original PC and aonnect it to another and then access the recovery key?

Bottom line, no matter how good is your protection protocol, how strong is your password, encryption and etc. If some hacker, or even law enforcement have access to your device, they will have some expensive forensics tool to crack open, your bitlocker, your veracrypt, your password manager... etc

So in a scenario where i have one tpm module, a win 11 and win 10 installation as a lab, though i want both bitlocker protected, i have to disable tpm bitlocker on one osd. So if i understood your video correctly the one without the tpm is (with usb or password) is vunerable and the other is safe?

Since if i use tpm bitlocker on both oses one will have a nonrecoverable nonbootable drive.

I have two questions. What if there is a different case where police only takes the hardware (hdd/ssd) without taking the whole pc. Would they still be able to access the memory ram / snapshot the drive and crack the password? Would it make it less effective or there would not be any vulnerability to encrypt without TPM modular method in this case?

it's not clear exactly where you got the recovery key.
- when you say that it is always at the front of an image, do you mean that it is readable from the disk without having to decrypt that disk?
- i'm assuming that the recovery key is loaded into memory so that it can be backed up somewhere: how do you avoid it getting into memory?

That was fantastic andy! well done for sharing another gem. I love forensics stuff like this, I think it is really cool and nerdy. And yeah, i completely agree there is always a trade off with security and usability or accessibility. What do you think of 3rd party password managers? I often say to people that you are putting all your eggs in one basket and trusting that company will never become a victim. I generally have a tierd password and email set up where very few companies will get my no.1 personal email address or password. Mostly just a secondary spam email specifically for all the crap we are often forced to sign up to.

Okay - I have a twist. We enables bitlocker in our office and all 45+ computers were encrypted fine but 2.

1) the first one would just freeze up and after multiple reboots and finally moving fast enough I was able to open the bitlocker menu and decrypt and computer is now running fine

2) The other, however, we said reboot later and it started the process… I saved the key and ID to a thumb drive and the employee continued to work as normal… he never rebooted but closed his laptop headed home and eventually his laptop died…

When he came back to work - windows recover popps up and request his key.. key doesn’t work

When manage-bde -status c: is typed it says completion:unknown everything is unknown and drive is locked…

Is there a workaround or a way to force bitlocker to complete its encryption process that was already started…

Hi Andy: I went to Password Forensic web site and it had a free install. But it mentioned only the first three characters or letters of a password. Most password are a lot more than three characters. To go on, it would cost almost $1,000 to get the complete program. Now, I see where it cost a lot of money. Mistakes can be very costly. Thanks again for the video. Although I cannot use what you put on here but very informative, anyway.

With my computer, it wouldn't work. I can't get passed the administrator password. In another video, it showed that if you enter some number, say five zero's, after the third time, you get a code and that is entered in an app and you choose your computer and in turn you get another code or password that you enter and gets into the BIOS and everything is fine if it works. No guarantees and does not work. There are similar videos that tell you another method and all haven't worked for me. So, I am stuck. You even mentioned to me that sorry this happened and good luck. Also the repairs would be expensive. Yes, it is and very expensive. For a company who needs this will pay it. I am just a user at home and unaffordable to me. The only thing I can do is to disassemble the laptop which HP says don't do it as you can further damage it. They are right. These new laptops are very difficult to get into and a lot of damage can be done because of very small parts and connectors that can break off. I started to do it but it was so hard that I just put it back together again. I thought I could find the CMOS battery and disconnect it which might have reset it. I have worked with these boards in the past but that was then. Now, everything is so miniaturized that it is almost impossible to do. The manufacturers make certain of that. So, I am back to square one and I have to go on from here. At least I can salvage the SSD drive.

Hi Andy: Thanks for your feedback and presentation. As a last resort, I am going to try what you presented. The video went rather fast and was hard to keep u p with you. I imagine I can just click on stop so as to get a better feel of what you are presenting. I do see the idea behind this and it is good protection. If it works for me, then I am so happy that I can get my laptop to work again. If not, well, I will chalk it up to not being smart to encrypt it in the first place. It is an expensive ordeal making this mistake. HP wants to charge me $300-$400 to fix it. I just might as well buy another computer. At least I can salvage the SSD drive so it won't be a total loss. If the computer still was under warranty, maybe
it wouldn't have cost anything. I will see what happens and let you know one way or the other, if it works. Thanks again.

I have an SSD from a client, the previous technician installed components into the clients Dell machine without disabling Bitlocker, they dropped the SSD of and since I have never done Bitlocker decrypting I am trying to take on the challenge.

Can I use this method using the clients SSD in my PC? and with what program did you use to create the VHD image file? With Bitlocker-ToGo? Can you explain that process a bit more if possible please Sir?

I have an image file created by FTK imager, is it fine to use that?

I cannot seem to locate Bitlocker-ToGo, where to I download this program?

Kind regards.
Ian.

Hi Andy: The video you show look s promising but here is something that I have done with my laptop. I converted to Linux and At first I completely formatted my SSD so as to install Zorin 16 which did work. The problem is that I wanted to go back to Windows 10 but once again I would have to reformat my drive but I cannot as I encrypted it and now I lost the code and all it keeps telling me to enter the password I am locked out. After three tries, I am told that I have reached my limit trying to get in and would have to start all over again. Where do I go from here? How do I resolve this mess that I got into? 😢 Thanks for your answer. 😊
