This scene is just so brutal, going back and forth between the Daemon & Cole duel and Aemma Arryn's death scene 😢

Daemon had all the advantages in life but Criston took him to school.

Criston Strong fights with 0 honor. Dude lost.

Daemon won this fight. Cole only "won" because he wasn't facing him anymore.

I loved season 1, but one thing I hate is how black and white they made characters, in the books it’s never made clear of rhaenearas and cristons realationship, the the fact they made him a villain over complete rumor and speculation always bothered me

The show severely downplayed Cole's skillset.

First of all - there's 2 ways to become a Kingsguard: political appointment to appease some Lord or through the strength of arms. Cole had no lords vouching for him but his skillset was more than enough to get him through the door and become Lord Commander (fyi unlike in the show, the Greens didn't make him LC but Viserys himself).

Second of all - Criston was a fuckin' beast with his morningstar. After wrecking Daemon TWICE, he pummeled Joffrey Lonmouth to death (in a fair melee) and changed Harwin Strong's nickname from "Breakbones" to "Brokenbones". In the end, he offered to fight the leader of the Winter Wolves; Roddy the Ruin and 2 other Riverlanders in a 3v1 to save his men. His opponents were so unsure of the outcome despite having the numerical advantage and just chose to kill him from a distance while his back was turned. The goal was to make him a footnote in history but it had the opposite effect.

Jaime fookin' Lannister would go on to commend Criston Cole's skills 200 years later.

Look at those armors, Daemon's armor is "brand new", or well maintained, meanwhile Criston armor is decayed, rusty, wait is it me or i managed to glance some pieces that are nor compatible.

When Daemon was showboating, the fight was essentially over. But dude snuck him from behind when he was clearly shown mercy. What a scrub.

Don't like how they changed this. In Fire and Blood, Criston Cole was an absolute chad, the arguable mastermind behind Aegon II's ascension and dedicated to his vows.

He was also the best fighter alive at the time, and his two victories over Daemon were not ambiguous whatsoever. He also completely stomped Harwin Strong into Harwin "Brokenbones," he didn't just lay down to be beat up by him in the training yard.

He died attempting to negotiate the safety of his men, after his army had been harassed and bloodied through guerilla tactics in a terrible march. His final offer was to single-handedly "duel" all three commanders of the enemy's army.

Anybody who really thinks daemon lost is losing it

Jousting, a fancy game for fancy lads.

In the book Cristy wrecks Daemon. No hit in the back required. Firstly, Daemon, whilt decent, isn't that great. He is only remarked and given Dark sister as he is the best targ fighter of his generation. And his generation has next to no males.
Cristy rose to the KG from house cole. House cole is an INCREDIBLY minor house. The KG is reserved really for high nobles, ROsby, Hightower, Darklyn, Whent, Vance, Piper etc etc, or the ultra-skilled.
Cole got in with skill.

The show however gives us a tv narrative. The end goal is to paint the greens as the bad guys, Cristy as sneaky, etc etc.
In the book Cristy wrecks Daemon in the tourney and melee.

Daemon's armor is just beautiful.

Ahh, to think I rooted for the wrong guy.

This was a very interesting scene from the perspective of reading Fire & Blood. I’m admittedly a book snob, but can admit the show changed quite a few things for the better, including this. I like that Daemon didn’t lose because he was out skilled (even though he probably was, Daemon has a Valyrian steel sword which GRRM goes to great lengths to tell us is a significant advantage) but his arrogant personality loses it for him. Somehow after this scene they managed to make it seem there are arguments that either is more skilled and both are justified.


Now I’m just curious how they plan to resolve this rivalry. Not going to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read Fire & Blood, but Cole and Daemon don’t exactly cross paths all that much moving forward, but this feels like it’s building towards something.

Criston and Daemon have the best death scenes in Fire & Blood so I really hope neither is changed to shoehorn in this rivalry causing the other’s death. Daemon’s death is the greatest spectacle, but Cole’s death is just literary perfection. He acts immaturely and emotionally and hides behind “honor” and his knighthood. Then in the end his duel offer is rejected and he’s killed like a dog after having his hypocrisy pointed out to him perfectly. “I’ll have no songs about how brave you died, Kingmaker. There’s tens of thousands dead on your account.” Possibly George’s best written death and it’s a high bar.

i see this as an absolute win. Daemon's arrogance and over confidence allowed Criston to strike him easily from behind. Had Daemon made Criston yield or out right kill him then it would have been okay, but Criston did neither and took his opening. He had every right to crush Daemon's head but showed mercy to an opponent who chose to prematurely celebrate instead of deciding the battle.

I thought Daemon's sword was Valyrian Steel. Why couldn't it cut through Cole's armour and chain?

I hate Criston for plot reasons but the fact he uses a flail.. that’s a baddd man 😂

Dark sister would have sliced the shield and the armor in one shot. It took multiple strikes and no dent in armor. Directors should have paid more attention to this.

So much could have changed had Criston just swung that mace into Daemon's face and killed him.

Are we supposed to see Cole as dishonourable in this scene for attacking Daemon while his back was turned?
