My theory is that both Steve and Herobrine are creations of Illagers. They are both very similar in appearance and very unique in a sense. The possibility is that one of them is a failed experiment. Tge question is what were they trying to achieve, if it was tge creation of intelligent being or basically a biological weapon. And concerning the nature of Illagers, my hunch says the latter.

Reminds me exactly of the orcs in Skyrim. Most other people made a major city then spread out with camps and outposts whereas Orcs spread across more but they were spread thin so that resulted in large orc camps dotted across Skyrim but none had any major power or ruled outside their own camps.
Pillagers have mansions where they're all safe, have lots happening and set up outposts and patrols whereas villagers are spread thin with no influence outside their own villages.
Pillagers also have end portal recreations and other things but their grey wool is also in the ancient cities so we can assume at least patrols have seen strongholds at some point and brought intel back and an outpost or large patrol could have explored an ancient city safely at some point. But since it's a city with no inhabitants, maybe that's where the villagers used to be from. We also don't know who built strongholds so maybe they migrated to the surface or the illager pale skin could imply they're from underground structures where they survived against monsters and eventually came to the surface and raided villages for supplies

Could you also explain why a cartographer villager would own a map to the woodland mansion?

i like the idea of totems trapping soul and not xp, when the totem is used by the player is the soul of villagers protecting the player from death

To be fair if the player could farm villages like that we the players would all absolutely be doing it in the most inhumane way possible just look what we do with trade halls now imagine something that gives you magic powers like the evokers

Or maybe, they're just a bunch of bandits who raid villages for food and other resources from time to time or to simply get revenge on the player for killing their friends.

I wish there was a mod out there that could allow nations of villagers to form and allow you to form your own. Having stuff like diplomacy and trade, taxation, policies and warfare. Now there are mods out there like that, but I mean like using villagers and not straying too far from vanilla.

I'm gonna be honest the villagers have three things to fear, the illagers, the player(stares at players who not only kill villagers but also kill the baby villagers), and the mobs. the villagers don't catch a break thats what i'm gonna be honest about. not even the iron golem catches a break

Since trading with villagers and breeding mobs gives u xp as well I think it's not just destruction based, I think the magical power comes from destruction and creation, which is ultimately what minecraft is all about

What's more interesting is the names of the Illagers. The definitions of Vindicator are "a person who clears someone of blame or suspicion" and "a person who shows or proves something to be right, reasonable, or justified." Which implies that they're not just evil, but rather they feel they are in the right and justified in their opposition.

The name Evoker comes from the word evoke, meaning "bring or recall to the conscious mind" and "invoke (a spirit or deity)." Of course named this because they summon (or invoke) vexes and evoker fangs to attack. What's really odd though is that even though they drop Totems of Undying, they don't actually use them... even though they can (like all mobs) use them if you use commands to put one in their mainhand or offhand.

Another interesting thing, is that in Minecraft Legends (although its still unsure if anything in the game is canon or not) Villagers and Illagers are considered one and the same. They live together and act the same, and the Illagers are just Villagers with gray colored skin. But later on in the story the Illagers get curious about the war going on with the Piglins and want to help fight after finding one of the piglin mace weapons... Knowledge, Foresight, and Action are very reluctant, but decide to grant their wish and give them iron axes, transforming them into Vindicators. They actually help you as one of the troops you can use in battle, but in the final cutscene of the game it implies that they're grumpier and begin to be less friendly with the Villagers. If Legends is a myth/story told by the Villagers based on an exaggerated true event, then perhaps this is part of their canon origin somehow (but again... we don't know if its canon yet).

Honestly I think the statue of the pillager [with the torch] is showing that they left their village, still having a brown robe, by looking at its shoulders. But maybe the lapis in the statue is showing that the pillagers are more smarter than the villagers, and with the torch, its showing that the pillagers are making a new path for themselves, and will hurt anything to do that.

I personally suspect that it's called the "Totem of Undying" because using it the way the Illagers use it turns you undead, like a proper undead Lich, as opposed to the zombies and skeletons that are more like... embodiments of evil that spontaneously form in the dark and take the form of things that frighten you. It would at least explain the Illager's complexions and the total disregard for Villagers' lives...
