I tried this. but every time my text was going to edit mode while i was trying to press on the control points. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
my text was "YOU" and i wasnt able to cover even that!! :(

PRESS "P" right before you move the points so your title doesnt move around when you try to move the points going inside your title

Or you can buy Motion for $49 and achieve a real draw-on with a brush that looks better and is easier. Why people go to such lengths to do things in programs never intended for that purpose is beyond me. Motion may be the best value going and almost nobody even considers buying it.

Thanks for the help, however there were a lot of points you didnt explain which I had to look up, like 1. how to upload your font to Final Cut and how you create new frames, also the text box stays there making it impossible to drag the mask tool over it. These are key instructions.

when I create a new compound clip and speed up the writing effect my letters begin to glitch in and out as if I had messed up the mask drawing and created overlap. However when I play frame by frame there is no error. What's happening?

How the fuck do you get your text to stay put? Mine just moves all over the place when I try to move a control point it is so frustrating

As I move the control points frame by frame and once I reach the end...all I get is the whole title being shown...not bit by bit..what am I doing wrong?

It can't be done. Control points of the mask can't be selected, instead the title itself is selected, then when moving the text is moved

Isn't there a plugin that makes this task 3 hours quicker?

anyone know if you can take it from a black background title slide and merge the text over a normal clip, basically like at the very end of the video how the words were over him walking on tracks? or do I need to do it all over again
