I cannot say this is magic since every time I turn around it's something else, but this did work so I could use WUD. Windows update is still stuck on checking for updates endlessly and I have tried about everything. Thanks.

That technique doesn't work on my H.P Pavillion (Win 8.1) x64. I have stopped Windows Update Service deleted "Softwaredistribution" in C:\Windows and restarted update services but nothing works, most of my automatic updates haven't installed either and I can't get KB2919442-x64 or KB2919335-x64 to install, it won't update drivers and when I restart it spends ages configuring windows settings before booting, Any help please ? - Mike
