Ooh I have read all of the known copies of Tintin and Asterix and Obelix when I was a kid and way before I started learning French. I never thought Thompson twins were named as Dupont and Dupond and Prof. Calculus had a totally French name. I feel like reading these classics again in French would enhance my French vocabulary. Hopefully I will get to read Moebius’s (Jean Giraud) works one day.

Great introduction.
Lots of Belgian stuff, but France and Belgium share a history when it comes to this.

Oh what a “faux pas” but Tintin is not a French BD! The author Herge was Belgian, so was the character Tintin! And it was even published in Belgian newspaper. Zep is technically Swiss and André Franquin is Belgian not French! Hahaha when I was a child most native French and Belgian people I met always pointed this out to me so I wouldn’t be misinformed. Fun how much the world changes in a lifetime.

Dupont et Dupond is also my favourite! Belgians comics were so big in Indonesia when I was a kid. I hadn't had a chance to really read them because when I grew up the hype has already taken over by Japanese manga. I just started collecting Tintin, Asterix and Lucky Luke coz I'm learning french and I'm totally obsessed!

Tintin was (is?) also a magazine and together with Spirou represents the 2 Belgian comics schools within the larger Franco - Belgian school.
Tintin for the more serious and traditional comics, Spirou for the more unhinged and experimental comics (this is a generalisation).
Not to mention there is also a Belgian Flemish School of which Bob & Bobette / Spike & Suzy are the most famous representatives. Though many of those comics have never been translated into other languages.

I loved looking at Tintin artwork as a kid, but I'm only now diving in to read the books. I'm so inspired by them that I've decided to learn French and read them in the original language. It was great to find your video and so fun to hear you describe other comics to check out. Thanks! -Jason (Spy Vibe)

Favorite Belgian comic is "The red knight", De rode ridder in flemish. I don't believe they were ever published outside of Belgium. If you're into medieval history, that's the one for you.
