Who are the smallest and most numerous critters

No matter how miserable and limited their lives are, by everything I can see in them, these creatures "want" to continue living and don't want to lose whatever individuality they have.

Fascinating as well as a bit horrifying. Fascinating - well, that speaks for itself. Horrifying, because I think it's undeniable that when the paramecia realize they have been caught they begin to panic and struggle to get free. And the ones that did manage to get free do an obvious "flight", i.e., get away from the amoeba as quick and as far as possible. But how are reactions (emotions?) such as realization, panic, and fleeing in fear generated in them...aren't they single cell animals with no brain? Obviously, there is much more to consciousness than we are aware of, folks.

The interesting thing for me is that these primitive creatures seem to react with fear or panic--speeding their movements as if in a desperate effort to escape. They don't just accept death.
