1TB SSD upgrade is worth it if you do a lot of virtualization i.e. VMware Fusion. The performance level is equivalent to NVMe Gen 5 SSDs.

I would just need something for tech support, where I might want to upgrade the ram but I would be using web based applications mostly and it would require Ethernet, and I have a monitor where I would be able to switch between a windows machine and a Mac, and of course I would be needing to use the USB type A slot for a wired headset. So I guess I should just go with the $599 machine, also just looking for a backup for my windows machine. So within the next year I would be getting this. Unless I should wait for the next model.

Excellent information. Right now, I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini, which I upgraded to 16 GB Ram and installed a 500 GB SSD. I run Studio One for my DAW. In spite of the age of this PC, it works fine. Only drawback is no further updates from Apple. I'll probably never go over 24 Tracks, and I don't use a lot of plug-ins. I think the base model with some external storage would be fine. It should last me another 10 years. Good job providing a tasked based analysis.😀

I ended up buying that sweet-spot M2 Mac Pro mini and I'm satisfied. 512gb is not a lot or storage but it's easy to add external. I also don't have FOMO with the Pro chip, which I kept feeling every time I looked at the base model.

For most people, if you are buying a Mac Mini, upgrade the RAM before SSD. And u can save bunch with external ssd nowadays. People who need to work professionally on projects that requires both the ultra fast build-in ssd and high rams shouldn't even consider a Mac Mini at the first place.

1.3-1.4 ssd speed is not slow bro :) Even standard sata 2.5 ssd is like "fast enough" for normal usage

Something to note about. Remember the RAM on these Macs do not behave the same as PC. The RAM on these Macs are unified memory, meaning that even if you do run out of 8GB RAM you have SWAP memory (Mac starts using SSD space). See if you have a 1TB external drive and then you have 8GB memory and you let the Mac use the 256GB for swap, you don't really need to upgrade to 16GB RAM or 512GB internal storage. Unless you are a hardcore video editor or production then maybe yes it would be advised to upgrade the internal parts. For average user, you don't. Save $$$.

My brand new out of the box mini M2 pro, ethernet port does not work. Google this issue and read the forum post of many other frustrated people. Wifi only.
It also crashes fusion 360 running on rosetta 2 frequently (and takes multiple minutes to start), basically unusable for that program.

Summary: 8GB RAM & 16 GB RAM doesn't make much difference.

I just bought the base mac mini M2, 8/256. And while I understand that it’s not the best, it should be enough for an average user. It may be outdated and not future proof, but for the price 8/256 is what the M1 entry level laptops were running. I think it’s fine for the price and what I’m expecting from it (hopefully). I’m totally fine with needing to update on a few years.

Thanks man, the Logic Pro test tells me what I really need to know, the sweet spot is the 16gb M2 Pro model, better by a long shot than the normal M2. I will have to save a liitle more to take that jump but I think it'll be worth it.

I see so many 8gb/256GB M1 Minis on sale, I think too many fell for the initial M1 hype and got into an underpowered machine for content production and had to step up for a more powerful model when they realized it didn't cut it.

Wait. 10 FPS isn't worth it? I can tell you it absolutely is (at least for me), especially when FPS is that low. Keep in mind that is an average. The additional FPS keeps you out of the 'slow and choppy' just that much more. I don't see the M2 being nearly as future proof as the M2Pro... You could argue, with a point that you can take home 2x M2 for the price of the M2 pro - or more. SO - just buy more computers. YMMV.

If the Studio came with something besides M1 today that might be a better option - but sadly it does not.

Which one will be good for trading?

If I only had to choose between upgrading between 8 gb of ram to 16 Gb or upgrading the SSD from 256 to 512 GB for office work and having longevity in mind for future os upgrades my conclusion would be the RAM , am I correct in this assumption?

i’m only here to see spec from m1 mac mini, mainly for the displays on the m2 pro’s. i’ll clearly wait till m3-ish, based on my needs, especially since the trade in value to Apple sucks on the Mac Mini.
i’m currently sitting on a 16 gb m1 mac mini with 512 gb storage. i would only consider the m2 pro for a true upgrade, based on current specs. I only get roughly $360 for trade in on a device i paid a grand on.
