"REDISCOVERING GREAT BRITISH HISTORY." #AntiquesRoadshow expert, Paul Atterbury, gave unique and expert insight into what many would say was the glorious heyday of the #ceramics industry in his presentation "Colour in Victorian Ceramics." to the Northern Ceramic Society. This clip focuses on the danger of lead glazing and how it killed both the mainly women and child workers and Majolica Pottery.
The toxic and aesthetic qualities of #Majolica are inseparable—Laborers were exposed daily to lead, cobalt, manganese, arsenic, chrome, and other deadly substances. It really was the high lead levels that makes those colors possible. Once lead was regulated there wasn’t any more majolica.

The curators of the recent Majolica Mania Exhibition commissioned a new ceramic work to memorialize the endangered laborers. Artist and Alfred University faculty Walter McConnell’s A Requiem in White, renders depictions of these workers in cast porcelain.
