Artists really need to understand that when you try to make a business out of your art you end up turning art into a business. This is not what the average artist wants. Most of us are better off keeping a 9 to 5 and doing art on the weekend. The alternative is being willing to “starve” to do art full time.

Few will be successful getting paid well to be a full time artist. The only other option is to change art into a business that is adjacent to what you used to call art. But this is not the same thing.

Making art that functions as furniture and making a furniture business are totally different things. And many artistic furniture makers lament this fact when the reality sets in. You have to make what the client wants, not what you want to make. And even so there aren’t a lot of clients willing to pay $6000 for a coffee table to be made bespoke and inefficiently by hand.

So do you want to make art or do you want to manufacture expensive furniture based on the rich clients demands, for the purpose of getting a paycheck?

If you do the latter you might find out that you still have to do your art on the weekend to satisfy your creative expression. So what have you actually changed? Still just a 9 to 5 that makes you get sick of the thing you used to love.

Copying someone else’s design without paying them a royalty, whilst legal, is decidedly unethical.

The mistake woodworkers do they are not mastering the design, they don’t even know how to create unique design. Using someone else design and saying we can do someone else design will not get you far.

40 years of only building what other folks want left me retired and building what I like - You are absolutely correct that's putting the cart before the horse, but worse I would argue is when you want to build things that also are a great sales piece - and you sell them, you are no longer a hobby, you are a business with all the taxes, book keeping, insurance, and other requirements that go with that. This is why I usually build two or three of everything, then just give the extras away.
