Unless it's a evap Not ready You'll pass and it's usually just a minor leak could be a gas cap I'm having a trouble, my evap won't reset Doesn't even go through the test cycle anymore after I fixed it it was a rubber hose that turned hard as a rock and cracked so I replaced it hasn't resetting how many thousand miles I'm always keeping the fuel pretty full probably that's why

Awesome information! Many people do buy the diagnostics devices, however knowing what you are looking at is a different issue. College facilities should have a crash course on devices. Example is you mentioned fuel trim numbers but how many people know that the fuel trim should be at 0%? Many times you see these numbers but really don't understand what they should be. A error code is the easiest thing to find but like the oxygen sensor not sending a variable signal but in parameters is the difference between a professional even emissions canister diagnostics is it in parameters? A video on the aspects of what the devices are indicating and what is a healthy reading would really help.

My Bluedriver arrived today per your recommended tools link. Zeroed in on the service engine alert on my wife’s car within one minute of use. Small fix, $27 part, but she wants a garage to change the part. Next test will be driving the car around and see if anything else trips. Thank you Scotty!

Thanks for explaining how to use some of the scan tool functions and more importantly how to interpret the data. I have an Innova 5210 scan tool and the owner’s manual doesn’t explain too many of the functions, but Scotty fills in the missing information. What a wealth of knowledge!

speaking of generic codes. i got an ecu processor fault and an oxygen sensor heater circuit high code. guess what was wrong with the car?? Hint it was not the ecu.

You do realize that if the vehicle you own is MDCCCCLXXXXV(1995 in Roman numerals), if you get an OBD2 scanner with the exact requirements, you can use that to troubleshoot your car.

Great review. These devices are as you say invaluable now. Thanks for your insight, and advice. Some Bluetooth OBD set-ups will now tell you if Eg ABS is fitted or not.

I've old school and modern battery and alternator test kit (DIY) that work on most 12/24v systems, but won't work on 6v (motorcycles and disability scooters etc), but they can be a phaff, an OBD device can do the same job, in seconds instead of (if you know what your doing) 10 -30 mins (depending on circumstances and fault).

The amount of times, back in the day, when I worked in parts, I'd have customer say to me "I need a new battery", I'd ask them if they were sure, they'd look all puzzled. I'd then go and test the battery and the alternator (the VR) and 8 times out of 10 it was an alternator fault, if it had overcharged the battery (a VR failure) then it would take the battery out too, thus it would kill a new battery too. Whether I sold them a battery or an alternator I always ended up with repeat business because I was honest👍💜😊

I had two friends on house boats, with a VR problem within a year of each other. Their batteries are big (banks of them) and very expensive. With caution they were able to limp back to dock, when I diagnosed the problem remotely, get the VR repaired and thus save their batteries💜👍

Just want to share, Lowes sells a Craftsman scan tool with a soft case for 55 dollars. It’s amazing! It has live data and all the features you could want. My cluster went out and while i was waiting for parts i plugged it in and put it in a cellphone holder. It even tells you Rpm and vehicle speed.
