Even though it's an old vid I will give people a tip about walking in the bush . As you go along a route stop occasionally and look back and try to identify large features , big ricks , big trees , etc. etc . and try to remember them because that is the way it will look on your return . Take notice of how you come back . Of course anyone who steps into the bush without a GPS or at least a compass and map is very unwise . Even a hand drawn map on a piece of paper with your camp on it and North marked can guide you home using a compass to orientate the map to the landscape .

I Recommend this to everyone but especially city dwellers, if you get lost in the woods, the most helpful thing for people like me and other SAR (search and rescue) crews, is to stop moving as soon as you realize you are lost. You could be right next to a highway or other populated area and by continuing to walk you can walk farther away from help. Also, if we know the general area of where you were, we can search there and it would be a whole lot easier to find you if you didn’t wander off.

Edit: You wouldn’t believe how many times I have gotten lost, realized I was lost, then sat down got my bearings and realized I was probably only 100 yards away from the road.

Good video bro keep it coming. As a hunter when ever I go out hunting I always take my orange tape with me and as I enter the forest from the trail I start tieing it on branches like ever 50 feet or so. It helps to navigate your way back. So my advice to new hunter give it a go it might just save your life and help you find your way back.

Of all the outdoor camping, bushcraft, survival videos i've ever seen, this one is my favorite. I wish you did more like this.
It has the comfortable outdoor living. Most people just focus on 'SURVIVAL' 'EXTREME'. The world has enough of them. You remind me of Ray Mears old stuff before the 2000s hit and every outdoor channel started to become Xtreme.
You make several experiments with this one, such as gathering materials to set a trap that fail, but it doesn't matter because you are in your element. You pick up a nest, and just share what you find along the way. Feels like a fairy tale in a way.
The environment is also breathtaking. If you ever read this comment, please share the location.
Your channel name should also be Woodbeard. Hope all is well in Canada.

Friction fire coal comes easier if you go slow at first and then speed up after it starts smoking. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Also, just going slow for a couple minutes before cutting out your notch will allow the stick to be conformed into the exact same shape as the divot hole you cut out to twist the stick down into. All that will keep you from unnecessarily huffing and puffing for a coal.

A small compass, a lighter, some 550 and a poncho would be valuable. The steel canteen and the saw are good, too.

Again, people lost in woods, don't cut THICK logs same size. They pull 2 or 3 loooong dead tree stems / or thick dead branches together and start burning them little by little.

@wildthoughts6959
@wildthoughts6959 - 01.01.2023 23:08

I love the video , BUT, You did something unrealistic though : The logs for cooking are tooooo thick . No one "LOST" in the woods would take the energy to cut 4.5" diameter logs , same size too :) You even mentioned in start of video: Don't exert too much energy. You can easily cook on 1/2 inch sticks you break with your foot. They look perfectly cut with electric saw. Let's assume u cut them with manual saw, those would exhaust u :) . By the way, most survival videos use logs bought from Home Depot, thinking experts don't notice. However, you provided many survival tips people can learn from.

If you see a mountain , use it as point of reference. Keeps walking towards it or away from it , you won't go in circles.

There are a lot of spruce/pine trees around with boughs available to put on the bottom with your grass on top of that, You could have even lai 2 logs inline with the down tree and used shorter limbs to go across the two logs forming a solid bed off the ground.
