Bordering Russia: The Imatra Perspective

The impact of the war in Ukraine to border traffic, border crossing, and how the decrease in Russian tourists since 2022 has affected the border town of Imatra in Finland's Southern Karelia. Finland shares a 1,340 kilometer (832 mile) border with Russia.

The one who suffers from these sanctions is Finland, not Russia. 😖

I was born in Imatra, but I moved away many years ago. Imatra was much more lively and dynamic town in the 1980s than nowadays. Its population was also bigger then. But even then, there were not many Russian tourists because the Soviet Union and the "iron curtain".

Greetings from St. Petersburg! Russians and Finns have always respected each other as neighbors. Except for money, the Russians did not bring anything to Eastern Finland. And there was no Russian threat to Finland. Thank you for closing the border: The Russian region of Karelia has now begun to develop economically because of this. We're resting there now. If the border is opened, we won't go to the Finns anyway.

I was in Imatra summer 2023 and it was pretty calm and quiet little town 😁
