В 1863 году к атлантическому побережью США была направлена русская эскадра под командованием адмирала Лесовского, а к тихоокеанскому- эскадра под командованием адмирала Попова.

Появление русских кораблей возле американских берегов произвело "сильное" впечатление на правительства Англии и Франции и они, в конечном итоге, отказались от вооружённого вторжения в США.
