Can it connect with lg thinq smart appliances

Can anyone help me please. I am a techophobe but do try. I've tried to set up a google home speaker. I assumed I could just download the app to my chromebook, well that doesn't work. I also tried using mt Fire tablet, again that failed. Am I right in assuming it will only work if you use a smartphone, which I don't have. Why is this ?
I got it working at my partners house, she downloaded the app on her smartphone, what I don't understand is that it worked even when her phone was switched off. What am I missing, apart from a younger brain !
