Some in our industry have publicly and privately opined that society publishers suffer from low business acumen and a 'can't see the forest for the trees' myopia that impedes their competitiveness in a market dominated by deep-pocketed commercial publishers.

This panel of experience society publishers came together at the ALPSP Conference to discuss just what is it that they do and why they have an important role to play in scholarly communication.

Speakers included:
David Sampson, Vice President and Publisher, Journals, American Society of Clinical Oncology
Leighton Chipperfield, Director of Publishing and Income Diversification, Microbiology Society
Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Associate Executive Director and Director of Scholarly Communication, Modern Language Association
Simon Inger, Consultant, Simon Inger Consulting
