Path of Exile vs Diablo: Is Path of Exile Better Than Diablo? Which One Should You Play?

I have over 1000 hours in Path of Exile, and I'm still learning it.

I started playing PoE on my PC and fell in love with the game but my PC sucks ass and could only run the game at 30FPS @ 900p. Then I found out it was on Xbox Series X in 4K @ 120FPS and moved over to that. It looks and plays so much better but this game just feels like it's meant to be played with mouse and keyboard. Playing it with a controller seems a bit more boring. Maybe it's just me but equipping items and moving things around is so much easier with a mouse and keyboard. It is very tedious and annoying with a controller. So if you have the option to play it on PC, definitely go with that over console. I haven't played Diablo yet but I'd like to try Diablo 4 and see if I'd like it as much as I like PoE. The only thing I actually want to spend money on with PoE is cosmetics because you can't really do much with the fashion side of the game.

for me the diablo 4 was def worth it, yes it was expensive af but! the graphic,story and ambiance was really worth it.

Been playing for a whole day and I forgot there is a market for real money. I just didn't bother to look at it because I'm having so much fun playing it with my pantless character

Diablo 4 is nothing but robbers. diablo 4 does not sell the game to you, it sells the registration file from the server. Part of Exile offers the game for free because it does not give you the game because internet is required, it just gives the registration file for free. Diablo 4 does not both give the game and sells the registration file to you, and shamelessly sells the in-game images .this is a big shame to companies that make free rpg. but people still pay diablo 4, I don't get it, it's so funny. diablo 4 goes instead of paying and playing I play Path of Exile 1-2 or Lost Ark because it's free. It's funny that games that require internet are sold with money. I'm sure people pay money to play blindly. and they defend it. diablo 4 everything is the same after a certain time, it's nauseating and there is no group search, you have to play alone or you have to go with your friends or discord and search for friends from there, isn't it funny. Don't pay money for Diablo 4 and similar games, don't let companies buy you, you buy them. So what they say should be what you say, not what they say, but because of the buyers, companies sell the game for money according to their minds. Do not pay for games with internet obligation, friends, they make fools of us and take the money in your pocket somehow.

D2 was best. Never gotso hyped for pc game ever

For me it comes down to pacing, and poe's pacing sucked imo. I uninstalled it after 2 hours was so bored. I am sure it gets better after like 16 hours into the game, but first impressions are everything and POE failed to grab me. Diablo 4 was love at first sight, I was loving the combat and pacing of the game within the first hour. POE also seems like you have to pretty much no-life the game to get anywhere on it, the skill tree seemed very overwhelming. While I appreciate that on some level, arpg hack n slash should always be about simple mindless fun with some degree of progression to keep it entertaining and diablo always seems to get that just right. I might give POE another try at some point in the future, but for now I'll stick with diablo.

first you talk about how you could just quit poe in the beginning because you dont understand anything what happens in the game and then you say it has no barrier to entry, looks like there is a barrier but some different one than monetary :D

PoE and Diablo ARE UNCOMPAREBLE.
Yes PoE started, was inspired by D2, and you can find many things on POE that reminds D2. But thats it.
D3 is just another game, another ganre. D4 is no arpg anymore, its almost like Lost Ark- slooow MMO-like game with isometric camera from ARPGs.
And Path of Exile is puuure ARPG. Its a game that Diablo should have be like. GGG deffenitely knows what ARPG means. You open your map, and there are 4k+ mobs on it, instead of maximum 1k in Diablo 3. You have mana flask so you can spam your primary ability, instead of cahrgin your Energy to hit few times with a stronger ability..

They are just Different. You cannot compare them anymore. You should not.

To add to that, poe really has no user base. As of writing this there's about half the amount of players playing D3 as there are poe. And Diablo fans are spread across d2, D3, immortal AND the D4 server slam is up as we speak. Not to mention D3 is heralded as the worst game in the franchise history. So being in competition with poe, with all that into consideration, is pretty abysmal.

People really try to pimp the path of exile "free to play" element and downplay how much you have to spend to actually enjoy the game and adequately experience endgame. With the face melting amount of currency types and the fact that they intentionally limit your standard inventory slots to small stacks of each type (10-20 items per stack on average) having thousands of a currency type would mean taking up every ounce of free inventory space you had just for that one currency type. So at the very least, you need a tab for currency and maps. But there's far too many other items in the game to not have tabs specifically for them. Like uniques, flasks, divination cards, and delve fossils.

Plus, you can't list items for sale on the games market feature without "premium tabs". All of which actually equate to being "pay to win". The advantage you gain from having premium tabs over someone who only has the 4 free basic tabs you get as a free player, is truly immeasurable. You can do so much more, much faster, and with much greater efficiency and quality of life that it's not really optional. If you opt to do it that way, it's much like optionally choosing to wipe your backside with sandpaper. It's there, you can use it if you don't want to spring for the good stuff, but man it's going to be painful.

So poe, I feel, has a base cost of around $40-$60 just to get a bare bones set of stash tabs to begin to feel like you're not throwing away valuable items to have inventory space. Which is about on par with most triple A titles. Except... Poe is not a triple A title.. it's a fun game with decent graphics but terribly optimized performance and the game balance is basically "do whatever makes you happy" cuz the "game" always devolves into people trying their hardest to make a build that basically plays itself.

By end game you really aren't playing anything outside of Uber bosses. You either tank everything, or get one shotted. There's rarely an in between where you feel like you're meticulously managing resources and using any amount of strategy to complete the objective. Why do that when you can build your character to burn down Ubers in a few seconds that are nearly immune to damage? It's really not a good "game" outside of the campaign and early end game.

And if you don't want to look like you crawled out of a dumpster and threw a burlap bag on your back, expect to pay $150+ for any decent looking mtx set....

Poe. Where one set of crappy looking wings I can recreate in blender in under an hour costs $65

If POE devs didn't have such a hard on for one shot mechanics, it would have been the best game in the world.

POE: Need a diploma to start the game, need an other diploma to go along the game. When a big streamer tells you that even after 5000 hrs you still learn new things, well thx but no thx. I have other things to do than be at school when I'm playing a game. Your character inventory is so freaking little you loot 10-12 items you are good to go back and empty it. That's one way to disrupt your enjoyement of killing monsters. You then look at the skill tree (more like a pool of skills insanely messy) and first thing you learn is that it's divided in 3 with each class starting where they shoul look for skills. Ok fine. You look at the builds and they go all over the place not making any sense. Then you check gameplay and it's all "dash spell dash spell dash spell" to the naked eye. *Thrilling*... and you also realize that nobody loots anything except a few orbs here and there cause in the end loot is useless!!!!! Wonderfuuuuuuullllll. No POE does not have the edge.

Great video - just picked up POE after hearing about it a lot - such a breath of fresh air. Didn't play D3 until recently as well and it's such basic trash compared to POE.

Did the D4 betas though and it looks like a vast improvement on D3. POE still has me intrigued though...POE2 could be huge

I think one thing not explained clearly about path of exile in this video is the leagues. The leagues aren't just a "new set of rules". As briefly mentioned, they add entire mechanics and often even new characters and storylines. If the league is well received, these additions get integrated into the main game. So the game is constantly growing and a league is sort of like a live playtest of new mechanics, usually already decently fleshed out at league start and perfected during it. This makes the game expansive, but also is part of the reason guides are needed to play it sometimes (though i've seen let's plays of people playing through most of the game without guides, and it worked out pretty well). The Leagues in POE are the biggest reason to still invest into the game, while starting diablo 3 at this point is probably a waste. POE endgame is also constantly being reworked. Leagues usually expand on not only new mechanics, but by changing up the end game systems as well. It's expansive and really makes it feel like the game changes a lot every league or 2. Honestly, to me D3 is a snoozefest compared to POE. And while build creation in poe is daunting to start. When you've sunk a few hundred hours into the game the expansive complicated build creation will be appreciated. And theres plenty of good guides out there to help make a fun build at the start.

PoE does a LOT of things better than D3, and I think PoE is definitely the superior game, but PoE's one consistent problem is utterly dogshit combat. It has the worst combat in the entire ARPG genre, and that's because there is no combat. All these options and yet very single build plays EXACTLY the same. You press literally 1 button while running in circles and everyone on screen instantly dies. That's not hyperbolic or an exaggeration. Every single build is like this when built correctly. Diablo's combat is far more engaging. You have endgame builds that have many different skills, not just 1 spammed button, and you get to actually juggle buffs and spells and actually fucking fight enemies rather than "press your 1 button to delete everything on screen instantly".

If GGG could make PoE's combat actually slightly interesting and not bottom tier dogshit it would be the best game the genre has ever seen, but alas here we are. D2 is still king.

PoE for season content, and literally endless possibility of builds and things to do. Diablo for HYPE until it slowly dies down as Blizzard screws up the game gradually...

the fact that this two games are comparable, yet one is free and one was 50? $ on release, makes them uncomparable... if that makes sense

D2 > POE > D3

Poe is so superior, d3 isnt even in the same league. There is a reason why quinn, alkaizer and kripp switched. Even tho d3 is one of the most sold games ever, they barely gave us new content. 1 new set per class and a character locked behind a 20 euro paywall. Meanwhile poe adds new stuff every 3 months. Including expansions that overhaul the entire end game. Not to mention poe is alot smoother once you get access to attack/cast speed jewels. Which is about 30 minutes to an hour into the game if not that fast. There are no new builds in d3. There is no room for creativity. You pick a set or go for lon and run that. While in poe, you are litteraly in a sandbox and the better you become at mastering all the systems, the easier it is to do your own thing that no one else is doing. Not to mention d3 gives you a set for the endgame about 2 hours into playing and after that its basically an idle game about numbers going up.

Here's a little secret for you to judge a quality of a game base on price. Its simple. It depends on how much fun you are having with the game. Its not the time, story, or graphics of the game. Its the amount of fun your getting from the game.

Simple answer is no. Diablo is more polished and gives a smoother play experience. When you level up, your character can equip better gear because your character's intrinsic abilities level with you. PoE limits you to nodes on a skill tree from which you cannot deviate without drastically altering your build. One example is that you could be just a couple intelligence or strength points away from being able to equip a piece of gear you crafted but without changing something else, you can't do it. That shit is frustrating. I don't want to have to reorganize my entire build because of a stat point.

Welp, didn’t make it very far… Who’s that? Oh, it’s 2003 & they want their gender-lock back, PoE?

I started PoE last week. Followed a guide, understood the systems, my build worked, got to Act 2. Got bored.

Not enough polish, not engaging enough, didnt give me 10% of the fun D4 beta gave me. It made me not care if the endgame was the real game, because to get there felt like a slog that had me going back to my phone to learn and understand stuff constantly. Call me casual, call me whatever you want. It wasnt fun and it didnt make me want to jump back to it every day.

For reference, i started playing Diablo 2 in 99, and still play it today. Thats my standard.

Poe is better imo but diablo has history behind it

Due to POE having most cosmetics in the shop, one of thee most enjoyable parts of ARG's is seeing your character grow and look cooler, if you have to pay for that then Diablo 4 is better, its a premium game and POE while complex, doesn't make it the better game, the skill tree is convoluted and too complicated

One thing which was definitely not mentioned is trading system in POE. I know people who each league don't even finish first act. All they do is trading! As one of my friends says pure capitalism simulator... with rules :)
