10 Best MODERN Turn Based JRPGs

I really don't understand what people like about DQXI. I tried to like it, but everything, EVERYTHING about it felt terrible for me. It's mind blowing to me that the game is as popular and beloved as it is. I know I know, not everything is for everyone.

Now Persona 5 Royal, that's one heck of a game. Easily my top 5 games of all time, potentially even top 3.

PS: isn't the background music at the very start of the video from Tokyo Xanadu? Another amazing JRPG that I love dearly (but not turn based)

(but imo only (!) if you turn on draconian difficulty for "harder enemies" & "exp cap when overleveled".., than DQXI difficulty is literally perfect, even if the very 1st tutorial boss might seem RNG-ish too difficulty, after that its just perfect)

Honestly Like a Dragon and Persona are my top 2 out of these.

My issue with DQ games pretty much they look and sound the same. If you compare 11 to older games I think 11 looks like a remake. You could say that for other franchises too including others in this video but with DQ I am burned out. I am not even excited about seeing 12 because I already know what it's going to look and sound like. There are franchise I go back and replay from time to time like a tradition and at the time of making this comment I have never replayed any Dragon Quest games. So far they have all been one and done.

Like a Dragon deserves a much higher spot on the list, it is easily top 3 of the decade.
Octopath Traveler is massively overrated, the quality is there but the fragmented narrative is weak af and the combat/job system is not good, very poorly tuned difficulty and overall just a bad copy of Bravely Default's, a game that is simply superior in every way with both entries.
Dragon Quest XI being number 1 is simply baffling, it's probably the worse entry in the franchise and the most generic, bland, vanilla AAA JRPG of all times, absolutely nothing about it shines aside from the graphic and maybe the music.
Absolutely shocking that FFVII Remake isn't even on the list, the whole thing is a Big L.

dude i need some recommendation for JRPG that have proportional character design like Fate/Samurai Remnant, Secret Nexus, Persona 5, Tales of Arise/Beseria, FF or Valkyrie Elysium, HSR, i dont care if its turn based, tactical or action, the art style/character design really important for me these days

I love dq11 but the only thing I hate is the soulless music composition and the lack of more music in the world. Hope the next game have better music since the original composer passed away. Never liked the guy but his music was good until his later years. They started to become pretty.... Blah. Some of the music scores in DQ 11 had this annoying thing where the notes will scale up and scale down as if the composer ran out of ideas. He was old after all. I wonder if he had a protege or maybe they'll hire someone to make similar music. Personally I would like a more updated music style to have a more fantasy feel in the songs but still want some of that orchestral flare added in.

I know it came out after this video, but Sea of Stars definitely deserves to be out here at least as an honorable mention 😄

I played the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series from 0 chronologically working towards the series' turn to RPG game and it was worth it.

I tried to give DQ11 a go but found it very slow to get moving and the combat really basic. I'm sure I'll give it another crack but didn't instantly hook me, which for a 50+ hr commitment for me it needs to

I just platinumed DQ11 and Sea of Stars, now I'm still in the turned based rpg mode and not sure what to play next. Probably will check out Chained Echoes next

Dragon quest 11 didn't impress me. I think it's way worse than most games on your list.

Disagree with a lot on this list; 1-4 were solid--you need to play Lost Odyssey

Honestly can't recommend pokemon in the list.
This gen literally had nothing exept being good looking.
Everything from the lack of endgame outside of overpriced dlc, super short actual story and probably the stupidest plot in the franchise was an huge dissapointement.

I will say, I feel like Persona 5 is a little over rated. I only played through it once, but never did I feel challenged and the burn out was real. Grinding social stats and confidant ranks got old real fast. Still think it is a good game, but Yakuza Like a Dragon was better in my opinion.

i truly cannot fathom about people still think persona 5 was a good game. gameplay-wise, fantastic. story-wise? absolute garbage that only a teenager or younger would enjoy. any self-respecting adult should be able to see its flaws. thank god it's not #1 like every other best of list. but #2 is still too generous

I have played more than a few awesome games in my life, but recently I played Persona 5 Royal, and maaaan... I can't even describe to how much I loved it. Regarding that I always thought that I don't like turn-based combat (one exception would be Pokemon on Gameboy), this game definitely changed my mind! And everything else was great as well. Characters, design, story, combat... Literally EVERYTHING. This game is now DEFINITELY on my list of the best games I've ever played. I loved loved loved it. Every second of it.

In case anyone wants to know, some other games on my "best of all times" list are for example: Secret of Mana (a very old Nintendo game), Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps (the Ori games are sooooo awesome), Tales of Berseria and Tales of Arise, Blue Fire (!!! a platformer that not many people seem to know about, but it was such a great experience!!! Awesome game!!), Kena: Bridge of Spirits (again, such a great game) and - of course - Hogwarts Legacy.

But again, Persona 5 Royal just blew my mind. 185 hours (in my case) and I loved every second of it.

The only problem I have with Persona 5 has nothing to do with the game itself but god damn it it feels like every jrpg I play now is trying so FUCKING hard to replicate the social link/confidant system. FUCKING STOP, you're not going to do it as well as Persona does it, you will NEVER do it as well as Persona does it so PLEASE JUST STOP. This mostly came up while I was playing Scarlet Nexus, which, don't get me wrong, IS a good game but god damn it, there's a social link system and it just made me role my eyes and face palm. It's nowhere near as good a system as Personas and it feels incredibly tacked on.


Other than that Persona 5 is my favorite game of all time and if you haven't played it you're doing yourself a disservice. The only game that is going to rival my love for Persona 5 is Persona 3 Reload when it comes out next year.

And here we are, with one of the most incredible turn based games that will change the genre forever, releasing on august 3rd, Baldur's Gate 3! Great to time to be alive!

Surprisingly, it it Wrath of the righteous that has revitalized my love for JRPGs....now hear me out, I know it is not a JRPG. and I have been playing Tabletop pathfinder for years, so why did it renew my interest.

Because it is a fucking slog on turn based mode, and I wanted tactical depth and challenge with character builds. It makes me realize "Oh right, good JRPGs really are just the streamlined version of this."
But WOTR is still a great game if you aren't a min maxer like me that wants to play the higher difficulties with how shifty the balance of Pathfinder 1 is. Pathfinder 2 is so much better.......but off track, JRPGs. I am going to try chained echoes. a friend brought it for me at the start of the year because he was so impressed with it that he wanted to share it.

I dropped Fuga near the end because it got too difficult for me 😅 good game though

Dq11 was soo damn good. I've played it on 3ds, and yes i played it on switch too. The fact that you can switch from 3d to 2d makes it more excellent and awesome

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is among my favorites.

I loved DQ 11, but I was SO UPSET when the def edition came out and I was expected to buy it again.

Dq11 surprised me most when they made the main character lead a pride parade- players should have the choice to not take part or skip it completely. DQ11...👍 POLITICS...👎

your comments on the last game was awful, you sound like you ran out of ideas what makes it good aside of pretty much the same thing as other games about the graphics and sort.

When it comes to RPG's, I'm very picky. I don't like grinding and I don't like random encounters. P5R is one of those games that is phenomenal. It's in my Gaming Hall of Fame only behind Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The amount of time it takes to complete P5R is very long, like over 100 hours, but if you can deal with the long run time, then you're in for a treat. TTYD is shorter, I'd say it's about 30 hours or so to beat the story, but I think the story is one of the best Nintendo has ever put out there. Let's hope Nintendo puts TTYD on Switch so I can play all of these greats on one console.

Bravely Default is not awesome. That's just a lie. It has a mediocre clicheic story, its characters are insufferable, and its later half is seriously depressing and boring (we're talking 40 hours of ultra repetitive gameplay here. Same fights over and over again with tiny changes, just getting harder and harder but not in a good way, in a lazy cheap way that demands dozens of hours grinding). Huh. I have never been more disappointed in a game than Octopath Traveller. The story was dire; the characters were instantly forgettable (I can't even remember one of their names), they never had any meaningful interactions with each other; the combat system was nice, but also completely irrelevant until you fought the true final overpowered boss (when you had to actually learn the intricacies of the combat for the first time); the levelling system was awful, so you had one character (your first) who was completely overpowered compared to everyone else, and, related, it was almost impossible to avoid being overpowered compared to the enemies... I genuinely can't understand why it has so many fans.

These games looks ancient to me.
