RD9 sounds a bit shite. Bright tinny. 909 has the full "warm" not so abrasive to the ears.

I've had mine a few months and only just found that it was in Enhanced Mode, didn't like that mode and kick sounded off to what I remembered. RTFM and sure enough there it is a tiny little section devoted to that. 🤯

Man, you need to tune them both similarly, otherwise what's the purpose?

The RD 9 comparison it's like a half semitone of a note on a keyboard a sort of slightly higher pitch change. it also sounds cleaner, more crisp, I personally feel sad to say it but the RD 9 sounds better. If you reduce the clarity the treble on the RD9 it would sound closer, and lower the pitch,

Can't find this anywhere: does the RD-9 also have the external instrument mode from the 909? Thanks

The 909 sounds horrible.. the RD-9 is so much punchier and full of life. I think the circuitry in those old 909's is starting to rot... time to toss them away in the rubbish bin.

The kick is definitely thinner on the RD-9. That’s for damn sure.

Your video description made me smile a lot! It's so true! I like my RD-9! It sounds fat and the sequencer is a pleasure to use. It's a professional drum computer that will do his job in every professional production environment as a 909 did back in the days. As it will do on stage for live action. We did also some RD & TB Video noodling on our channel! Actually we're preparing a deeper 909 vs RD-9 comparison and a TB-303 vs TD-3 Sequencer workshop. But the old stuff has to be fixed first! :-)
Check it out!

The RD9 (in this video) sound magnitudes weaker than the original.
And yeah dude it matters.

Crispier highs on the RD-9. I suspect it has to do with age of the TR-909's caps. Both are quite usable. Would you even notice in a track or during a live jam? Probably not. If you have a TR-909... great, you have a killer box! If you don't, the RD-9 is a pretty good sounding replacement and a great value.

Just tune the complete output of the rd-9 about 10hz lower and it will sound the same. Listen to old tracks that used the 909 they sound brighter too now. I think a big part of the darker sound are old components.

Well I did the eyes shut technique and the times my ears gave me the positive feedback was the rd9. I loved my old 909 and I’ve never come across a clone that could touch it for expression and pure sound quality until now.

The pitch on the rd-9 is off. I bet if it was tuned the correct way the difference between the two would be that much insignificant..

ive made my own 909 out of empty drinks cans (for that lovely rattly snare) , a big old cardboard box for kick, upturned buckets of differing sizes for toms and a large poster of Morrissey exposing his butt for claps. man can i take it to the fridge or wot?

disclaimer. Purists feelings will be hurt in this version like we give a fek. stop wunking over how accurate it sounds and actually make some music perhaps??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The tr 909 sounds definitely better and fatter, but the notes played on each part on the rd9 are significantly higher in pitch then the tr-909, so is difficult to do a good comparison.

That TR sounds bit muddy and saturated a lot. Its definitely a sound I would fine useful in a tune or two, but I wouldn't want to have the distortion all the time...and bringing that top end back will bring some noise back as well, so gating will be needed....not a big deal, but something to consider.
That RD-9 sounds clean and provides a better starting point to get to different sounds in the studio with some processing, including the sound I hear from the TR-909 in this video.

I would of course love to have an original TR-909 to look at, jam, upload photos off and of course, record when I want that muddy and distorted sound, but in most cases, the RD-9 is the one I would pick in the studio for sure.

Will you make a video using the bonus features of the RD-9? (wave designer / filter / enhanced mode stuff) In a musical way! Jam it!
I really like rumbling the RD-8 with wave designer sustain on max. I look forward to do the same with the RD-9.
Also, are there other interesting drum machines you really like and why? (modern ones, available in a shop)
Cheers!

Hi hats & cymbals sound nothing alike, not even close. The rest just sounds mostly like differences in pitch. It would have been cool to her more without hi hats and cymbals. I'm looking forward to a demo of the RD-9 that's similar to the on you did with the RD-8 MKII earlier today.
