The waterfall effect needs a modern name that our tech generation can grasp. I propose "the guitar hero effect".

It took a few minutes of practice for me to see the dancer go anti-clockwise by just focusing on the lowest foot. For a moment it stopped spinning and was just moving left and right. Clockwise still looks far more natural though.

You actually did blow my mind but I lived so I'm suing for pain and suffering and mental and emotional damage LOL

You are wrong. I only looked at the dancers foot . She was going counter clockwise until you said something. Then I blinked and she switched, I never looked at her hand.

I had an odd fixation with optical illusions when I was in my young teens and I remember sharing at a gif of the Spinning Dancer on Wikipedia for a long time trying to understand the illusion. When I finally got it to flip directions, I was stunned.

I call them optical conclusions, instead of illusions, because you see what you wanted to see. LOL

I've had the experience of seeing one of these illusions one way, then when finally seeing it the other way, I could no longer see it the first way...

So information is HIGHLY dependent on our perceptions because we aren’t conscious enough or do not have enough attention to examine the environment efficiently. So it relies on memory to put the puzzle pieces together rather than taking the time to analyze it. Very interesting.

On a hot day I can see water mirages on the road because the road is hotter than the air.

By the time you got to the tables my eyes felt like I had been staring at the sun or I was Snowblind! When you came back from the spinning one you looked pink. I can get the dancer on both feet pretty quickly and going the other way.

The Flying Dutchman isn't the most famous maritime mirage.
The Titanic hitting an iceberg is, although not all know this was the cause.
The sudden channel of extremely cold air/water trapped beneath warm air caused horizon refraction(mirage) hiding a large iceberg which would normally be seen from 30 minutes away against a very clear star lit night to only being seen 30 seconds before impact.
The same optical illusion(refraction) is believed to be the reason the California never went to aid the Titanic even though crew testimony from the California said the ship they saw wasn't the largest ship in the world, or they couldn't see the steam stacks of an ocean liner but a much smaller vessel, when infact it was the titanic.

there must be something wrong with me because i can see any of those things hes talking about except the moving picture thing.

the shepard's tables in this example are NOT exactly the same table top. you can prove it by going into M$paint and moving the 2nd top to where the 1st is - lining up the vertical parallel lines at the top of the tables. they are now NOT lined up at the bottom

I saw the dancer rotating anticlockwise for the 1st few rotations, changing to clockwise when her outstretched leg was to the right.

The real challenge is seeing the top of the dancer spinning clockwise and the bottom counter clockwise

I'm still wait for the 8 mind blowing illusions.

i think almost everyone can switch between the two if the yswitch from looking at her hand to her leg
