In agreement with you 100% on these. Although I’d go so far as to say anybody out of high school should probably avoid this stuff.

Pretty much everything you listed is from the feminine side and I concur that it's trash. I also agree that the classic preppy look is definitely a thing. People also mistake you for being in charge. It's just a shirt with a collar, ma'am, I don't work here.
Edit: born in 73.

The key here is the word “trends”. In our age group ALL trends should be avoided! I told my local Zegna Manager to give me a shout when he didn’t have any more sweatpants displayed in the shop! No no no and no athlesure wear for $1000 at any time! For stealth wealth, that’s the norm in Zurich and I agree. High quality classic pieces that stand the test of time.

There are 60+yr old men in Japan that throw out the idea of “dressing your age” and they’re totally slaying it! I understand if you’re inexperienced in being fashion-conscious and need guidance. And it’s not about following trends. But at some point, you can get passed “dressing to impress” and rather dress to EXPRESS. Or, you can stick to that “uniform” of a 40yr old. Ultimately, wear what makes you feel good!

I would also like to add that average/regular fitting trousers never go out of fashion, slim fit and baggy always go in and out of style.
Skinny jeans don't look good on chunky or muscular legs either and I've heard several arguments against that. However, If you're big guy/gal and skinny jeans make you comfortable/happy, then that's just fine too.

Definitely agree with alot of this BUT it also from your own words sounds like the reason you dont recommend it is because, "you dont get it", " you dont know when it started", "this is for young guys", "athletic wear is pajamas". You sound a bit out of touch, most of the trends you mentioned i agree with but your reasoning sounds so out of touch and judgemental karen esque. 50+ or not there are designers like Tom Ford, Tod Snyder and others understand being current but stylish and it fitting appropriately for older men. I would maybe brush up on your references a bit, and also stop being so judgemental as men 50+ its hard to imagine looking at a random stranger thst could be leaving the gym out shopping and saying hes sloppy and lazy.....it sounds catty and petty and ignorant at worst.

Old money aesthetic is more than preppy style its fit and quality over garish excess like the difference between wearing Zegna vs Gucci or Loro Piana vs Balenciaga not being a fashion karen...

I like slightly oversized clothing because I personally find it much more comfortable, especially in the Florida heat. Pants that are a little on the looser side, but nowhere near as extreme as what you showed. Prefer more of a regular/standard fit vs a slim fit.
My style is more slightly edgy than preppy, however I agree with those trends, especially the chunky shoes. I have an expensive mesh knit polo which sits somewhere between a nice knit, and the crotchet style. It's just too see thru, if I was 21 and ripped then maybe !

😂 you say nail painting is for young men but you show Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp in their mid 50s with painted nails and Ozzy Osbourne still paints his nails. I agree with your mature looks but it’s ok to mature the trends to fit your style. I refuse to be put in that box at a certain age. I agree not everyone can pull off looks but if you can and you can do it in a fashionable way I say do it. Buck the rules.

Thanks for this video, John. I'm a 76 year-old man who likes to look good in clothes appropriate for the occasion and for my age. I was beginning to think I would simply have to go quietly to the grave marked as a dinosaur for my tastes. Your videos have made me feel validated again.
I simply don't understand why anyone would want to wear shoes with 1 inch thick soles except to a construction site, or why anyone would wear sweat pants in public (especially stained ones). And I do wear sweat pants at home and in the gym.

I agree for the most part. I do think a more robust shoe might be a good choice for heavier built men. I knew a guy that was 6’ about 280 (not very muscular) who wore immaculately tailored suits, but always wore dainty Gucci horse bit loafers, the proportions were just way off.

As for footwear, I thankfully have never blown money on trends that make no sense like overly chunky shoes. Living in Florida and mostly working from home i rarely have the need for dress shoes but have some for those once in awhile times when they are required. I typically wear sneakers as they are comfortable and functional. Currently my rotation of sneakers include Nike, Saucony, and All Birds. On a casual weather permitting i may just wear a pair of Reef sandals. Same thing with shoes that I apply with clothes, good quality and fit but don’t overpay. My Nike’s were heavily discounted on sale, and my other sneakers were even cheaper.

Interesting video, I am a 54 year old Gen Xer and I live in Florida. I work 4 days a week from home and 1 day a week in the office. Since I am in Florida no need for jackets, sweaters, etc. but I have some for when I travel. At home it is typically a nice pair of shorts and a polo (for days with Zoom call meetings) or a nice plain organic solid color tshirt (if no Zoom calls). At the office depending on time of year it is either a nice pair of jeans or khakis and a polo or long sleeve button up cotton shirt sort of like what you are wearing in video. Unless you are young and really into fashion I say don’t overthink it too much. I say buy good quality clothes on sale if possible not trendy or luxury. I have found you want to avoid cheap clothes and overpriced clothes too.

You are correct - I did some analysis of some over the top styles; normally worn by people who are less intelligent with low educational level - their new found wealth from music & movie acting they just wear what they want from over the top pants, tops combination to tattoo, finger nails to body piercing. You can easily determined who are highly refined dresser to lousy stylish - check their educational level and you will know.

thank you man, for the video...there are so many guys all ages now days that have no clue about wearing clothes, especially in America. Trends are not for everyone and even though they last longer on men than on women they should be taken accordingly by age and personal style, trust me, as a man also in my 50's, who loves clothes and worked in fashion in sales and in design, i know what i am talking about.
The sweat pants, the big shoes, the white sneakers, the tall socks while wearing shorts, super skinny tight pants, the hideous macrame shirts, it is time to go! I am so sick of it. But only disagreeing with you about the wide leg pants. I am glad they are back since we've been having skinny pants as the only shape for anything in pants in the market: suit pants, chinos, jeans, cargos, you name it only to have straight pants as another option. And i mean no saggy on the crotch, or crop at the bottom, i mean lowy well tailored pants, any material fit to your size. Always so chic. Everytime i wear a pair i allways get compliment or make remarks about how stylish i look.
Now if the dimension on the legs are not too exagerated, wide leg pants are so elegant and comfortable, just like Armani nows how to make them!, glad they are back, even though i have been wearing them always no matter the times.
Well, there you go, was my only objection to your video!

The classic looks never go away, true, but people are pushing boundaries and raising questions like what defines gender, wealth and aesthetics. And that pioneering curiosity, is way more important and exciting than a classic look.
