For anyone wanting early game cash, with 40 assasination and a bit of sneaking you can kidnap the dust king, and then turn him in to any faction for 35k. You can then lockpick his cage, and when the guards knock him down you can pick him up and turn him in to another faction for another 35k

Honestly it's funny to say, but you missed out on a ton of free experience as a slave.

If you do nothing and let your character work, they'll build up their athletics and laboring skills. If you try to escape, you'll build up your lockpicking and sneaking skills, maybe even thievery and assassination if not attack/defense.

Mostly, though, it's lockpicking, sneaking and athletics. If you try to escape they beat you down, but they just heal you right back up and put you in a cage to recover, so you never really suffer that much. I must have been at like 40 lockpicking or more before leaving with my main character, which came in handy when I eventually started cracking into second empire caches. Had plenty of loot to pick up and the mercenaries I hired took care of the spiders for me.

It's such a slow build-up to them becoming a competent character, but once they start to get up there in points they really hold their own. Of course you still have to be careful. I save scum a lot just because it's so easy to die off completely and just... lose all progress you've made, but even that won't really rush the game all that much. It's a long way to 100 for each of your stats and you have so much you have to research and collect. I've yet to even begin my own outpost, but I'm feeling more confident with it that I'm considering giving it a try soon, after I set myself up in a Shek city. Just need to move west. The Tech Hunters city I was in started getting overrun with bandits despite my exhaustive efforts to destroy the Reaver presence by capturing and killing their leader. Weak or no, the Grass Pirates are numerous and incredibly obnoxious and I lived in the big building right next to the gate, so... time to move on. I'll come back when/if the guards have replenished their ranks.

In Stoat you can kidnap people into one of the small storage buildings, close the door, wait for them to wake up and then beat them to dead. 🙂 Good way to sell some armor back to the owners.
