Request an itemized bill and look up fair market values of those items. Hospitals tend to overcharge on medical care in the US specifically for insurance companies. If you dont have insurance or even if you do, you can call the hospital and get the price knocked down by a lot. Often the amount you are charged after the insurance pays them is written off as a loss on taxes. So the large amount on the bill is to make sure they dont lose money overall because they 100% expect to lose money overall. So you can talk your bill down a lot pretty easily. People just are never taught this unless you know people who work in medical. Also, if you dont have health insurance, look into medicaid. Ask your case worker if you have one.
