Thanks Will. When you say top down mixing, do you simply mean starting with the most important things as you say in this video, or do you nean the approach where you mix into your limited/compressed etc master bus ? Because some poopoo the latter method. Which do you mean?

The fact that you gave a before and after audio of muddiness and clarity is gold. I cant ever explain it in words. I can always show this video for an example.

This is so fascinating! I've been a trance/house lover for many years. It began with ATB - 9 (P.M. 'Til I Come) in 1999 when I was 13! I know absolutely nothing about music theory, so this is so god damn interesting and explains why I can't stand how trance music has sounded since post 2011. & why I'm really into melodic progressive house/techno these days.

I have 1 question, maybe not the right video for this, but well.

Imagine you have a recording, that was made live, and the audio is bad.

There is people talking in the background, the original music is coming from some pro speakers, but the recording is far in the back of the room and there is bass distortion since the recording device (phone in my case) was just recording the general audio from the room and not only the output from the mixing table.

Is there any chance to save that recording and make it sound reasonably good in comparison to the base recording?

Or do you really need the multiple sounds to edit, like the bass and kick and voice in different lines to be able to edit them individually?

Isn't it possible to for example isolate the bass or the kick or whatever from 1 single track and make adjustments to it?

Thank you SO much....Sidechaining in Ableton = so easy with that Input pull-down. I'm using Reason Studio and it's not quite that easy :(

you say it yourself , that the KICK is the most fundamental sound on a mixdown, because i saw someone (i think in your channel) saying the Bass is the most important thing in th mix, which i disagree 100% by experience.the kick is the fundamental frequence at the low end which will determine the overall mixdown of the track, changing the kick as you did,one can hear noticable differences, but you could also tune the already existing kick.beautifull track nevertheless, good job , great techniques.

Good video. Just some notes. Too much cut-off on any sound can make it too thin especially when using plugins. Also, some of the best mastering engineers from around the world said to me, always mono the kick and bass as standard - this is important for vinyl pressing. I actually had a mastering engineer nearly reject one of my tracks because he was complaining about minor phase issues and I've been releasing nearly 100 records since the 90s. It would be interesting to see a video explaining the differences between vinyl and digital mastering.

You mention sound selection which is valid but you changed the kick on a project that was finished. That would mean you would have processed all of the tracks including whatever kick you selected to start with..... Are you saying that after shaping your initial kick you decided it wasn't fitting, is that when you go and select another one?

Hi, love the tips! I wish if you're trying to make sound comparison like before or after, please make it a lil longer and don't add your voice in between so I could hear them clearly. I might be having a not good ears so I need to focus and repeat the before and after part several times. Just my 2cent! Cheers!
