you always heve clothes and blankets....... , but a junkng a heatpump, fuck that. get an AC, or a climate controller? We Have double digits BTU's of heating gas and electric powered or even chemical powered. or all 3 i donnt know but no heat pumps otherwise i wouldn't need to turn my thermostat at just 15degrees celcius in the winter or when i want it warmer at 18 and get more clothers and a comforter. for my bath and water ill just get a 500liter boiler., enough for a bath and shower., and washing machines heat the water up themselves so do dryvers, but with a AC, if you goit a dual AC and COLD pumpin one, just put the exaust of the AC though you ventilation duct, and mine luckily runs just 15cm right straight trough the other side, blocking the neigbours and mien pitifull air vent designed just to pump out harmfull stuff like if someone didn't close their gass cooking thingymybobso what i did was plug min en and and run a smaller diameter pipe so air can go run verticallyand like a rocket nozle. the bathroom with clothjers drying, no wash dryer.... takes longer, for the moisty warm air to cooldown the clothes but works well in the winter and the door nof the bathroomn seals postive pressive. lotsa rubber seals butthe vent above the front door that goes into the flats's cool rooom sucks that air out apperentlyadding fans to my bathroom vent, and voila my rubber sealer main studio room has positive pressure, and presses to door, cklosed in a cool spaces, its much harder to cool down your place, than to warm it up.

2nd question. I live on the coast. Everything metal rusts rapidly. I buy stuff for the garden like bird feeders and metal tables. Even if it's painted it typically lasts 1 to 2 years before rust destroys it due to salt content. How long would a metal enclosure of a heat pump last before it's a complete eye sore. The neighbours argument won't matter if anyone has them. It'll be loud with all of them at once in a terrace! Flats might have to share them and pay as a group?

I'm going to question if the environmental benefits are as big as they say if the efficiency in the majority of houses is so low and it needs to run far more often and use immersion heater. Is it really any more energy efficient? I'm sure with all the right insulation running as intended it is 3x better for the planet but I bet for the majority of our houses it isn't.

In BC Canada, gas is about half the cost of electricity and a heat pump is a third of the cost. So you save 1/6th but you are doing it pollution free since we're all on hydro power and we pay about 8 cents / kWh. It works here. We even have heat pump water heaters now, down to 40 gallons. We've been getting a lot better with insulation and sealing, Tyvek wraps, full fibreglass insulation and the like.
Clearly the UK is very different and I don't know what you do unless it's a lot more nuclear power.

Truth is, electric will never be more efficient than fossil fuels. Hybrid cars bridge the gap, figure out a hybrid heat/cool system.

As an engineer I am hugely skeptical of air source heat pumps. That said, my MIL has a heat pump, no gas, and solar PV, and gets a negative electricity bill even in mid winter.

If you have a gas furnace install an air conditioner. Your electric bill will be much lower. Cold winter, gas. Hot summer a/c.

Sorry, man, you confused everything with everything. There are several reasons why it didn't work well in your case: 1) Installation was done not professionally. You have to properly vacuum the lines +add the refrigerant if the lines are too long. 2) You used the wrong model of the heat pump for specific environmental conditions and the house isolation. If you do these things properly the heat pump will save you about 70% of energy.

I used to install, around 32 degrees and lower outside a heat pump is shoveling crap against the tide. They are a beautiful thing down to around 40 to 38 degrees. Lower than that and it starts to COST MORE to run it, electric strips start picking up the slack, defrost cycle, CRUNCH. I use a heat-pump down to 32 30 and then switch to oil.

The whole climate change issue is rife with 'offical' misinformation foisted on us by the government & so-called experts. The agenda is a massive money scam that has been shoved in our faces under some guise of "oh my God! The planet climate is changing!" - well, no sh-t the climate is changing. We just so happen to live on a wonderfully dynamic ever changing planet not some stagnant rock zipping thru space.

One thing I did not know is that you need a hot water tank, even if after some thiking it appears natural, to heat the water that goes to heat water radiator. And yes, it appears now more and more clearly that they are expensive, and use a lot of electricity.

Live in Launceston Tasmania and removed heat pump and installed wood heater..warm at last. Heat pump would be ok april September October for heat and maybe 14 days a year for cooling . During cold Tassie weather the heat pump was barely adequate and virtually useless if there was a frost down to -3*C .It would go through defrost cycles every 40 minutes or so under such weather conditions. Coming originally from Falkirk central Scotland where the worst winter frosts are much worse , I can't imagine how air based heat pumps would work in uk . I did notice that in Halifax Nova Scotia many properties were heat pump heated so maybe they were ground based( Halifax gets much colder than uk). In short if you have a poorly insulated older property then an air based heat pump would be hyper expensive to run in anything like cold weather .

Why not just use a regular 2 way air conditioner instead?

Cheaper to install. Heats, cools and dries the room quicker. No need for complex pipes. It's a heat pump that blows hot, or cold air, not just hot. Great for summer and winter. I have one in Russia and I love it. Why the Brits don't use split systems is beyond me. It would solve your mold issues entirely. Heat pumps are basically overengineered Aircons that don't cool.

Oh and for those living in flats and houses with more than 1 room. Just get an Aircon system that features one External pump that runs multiple internal units. It's like central heating, but every room has it's own thermostat. What's not to like?
