Personally i don't buy J.Sawyer's statement on the Service Rifle being all-pre-war. I like to think the wood comes from pine trees, or maybe even redwood. Surely the NCR has lumber yards!

I mean, if the fallout 4 assault rifle was established in lore as being intended purely for use by power armour units I can kind of accept that. letting the soldiers carry heavier equipment was kind of the entire POINT of power armour.

One minor mistake - whilst yes, AK-47 is widely considered to be the best AR ever made, it is not reliable at all. It has a very simple design based on the Nazi STG-44 with extended rifle to accommodate the Soviet 7.62×39mm bullet type, with very good accuracy, spread and strength, but lacking any safety features that makes it useable in any unfavourable weather, and only has a 6000 shot base life, while for comparison the M16A4 has a 45000 shot life.

In a sense a regular Volkssturmgewehr could possibly be produced in post-War conditions if one had the schematics. Though how they cram a .45 ACP bullet into a chamber and clip made for 7.92 Kurtz is beyond me given the design of the magazine that is clearly for a longer round like the 7.92.

Random gun nerd comment about the M14. You point out that it says it fires 7.62 in the description, but takes .303 in-game. These both can be true. The M14 was originally chambered in 7.62 NATO. However, the chamber/barrel tolerances are such that it can fire .303 British.

The handmade rifle is very specifically a reference to a guy in russia who set out to make his very own ak47....out of a shovel
He melted down shovels and pounded them into shape, making the reciever this way, and buying spare parts for the mechanisms
The final product looked mostly professional except when you looked closely and saw how hammered out everything looked
The only other sign was the shovel handle for the stock

Now that I think about it, the Service Rifle IS an AR-10, but it's like one of those Brownell production that chambers the 223 cartridges, since the in game model doesn't haves the bolt on the back (those look ugly as poop anyway), but they didn't model in the bolt under the carry handle either. BUT since the reloading animation are racking the bolt likes an AK, or just reused the Chinese Assault rifle animation, the bolt on the top could be bends on the right sides intentionally at part of the design, it's would make more sense not to have that bolt block out the iron sight if the carry handle are remove.

I don't know about it in the Fallout lore but in real life, at some point in the '90s or late 80's china and Russia flooded the civilian arms market with very cheap firearms which could explain why the weapons are very common the earlier games and in fallout 3 also it's not uncommon for soldiers to take enemy's weapons i believe one of the sim soldiers in anchorage talk about getting a pistol for his kid or brother and as for the handmade rifle again i don't know about in fallout lore but in real life, they banned the sales of the gun but not the parts so rifle parts kits were being sold and people had to make the gun themselves and the SVD style stock is a bit common for the civilian Vepr AK in Russia but i don't think they sell them in the US ever since i think now all gun-related sales are band

The OG Fallout assault rifle may not necessarily be Russian because of the AK designation. The Swedish use a rifle called the AK5, which is a Swedish version of the FN FNC. The AK there stands for Automatkarbin.

The way you said "cetme" letter by letter was a bit funny to me. Everyone else seems to just say it in one word.
I will talk about a few interesting things.
The type 93 is heavily derived from the ak (obviusly) and seems to take a few design ques from the rpd lmg (notably in the shape of the handguard).
It should also be said that that the cetme/ g3 is ironicaly not capable of mounting scopes without modification, c!nt function without the stock (it has the recoil spring in it) and is terrible with supressors. The "91" in the name also probably comes from the "ptr 91", an american clone of the g3 and the only realistic way of getting one.
Another wierd thing to point out is the caliber of these weapons. While 556 is an option with both the ak and g3 family of rifles, they are more often offered in other calobers-7.62 soviet and 5.45 for the ak and 7.62 nato for the g3. The wood furniture and streight mag on the g3 make it especially apparent that it is not based on the hk33, the 556 chambered g3.
Also, i realy think that the reason fallout features more aks and less m4s and stuff is that they went with the ak= rugged stereotype when developing the game.
Another titbit: assault rifles are defined partialy by the intermidiate cartrige. Techincaly soeaking, the g3 and fal are battle rifles.

I think the reason a lot of homemade rifles had no stock is that if they are an alternate version of the Chinese rifle, they had to be disassembled to be smuggled into the country. This resulted in a lot of parts missing from the weapon.

I remember hearing the reason for The Problem Solver and The Splattercannon having the same legendary effect is so that you don't lose out on a really powerful rifle if you decide to murder all the raiders in Nuka-World. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is true, it's a pretty cool way to allow the player to not have to devote to Charisma just to pick up one of the most powerful rifles in the game.

"AK" can possibly stand for things other than it being Kalshnikov-derived. For example, Sweden has rifles called AKs, standing for "automatkarbin". Granted, Swedish guns in the US doesn't make a ton of sense either, especially since it's kind of big to be described as a carbine, even by Swedish conventions.

I like to think the Fallout 4 "Assault Rifle" is designated as such because it's intended for power armor soldiers, so for them, it's used as a rifle, not a machine gun.
