This guy worked for some pretty reprehensible people. Good to know what he knows, but I wouldn’t give him too much credit.
Don’t get me wrong, so did I. And I also deserve extra scrutiny.

russia isn’t very important anymore but clearly has big problems accepting that. Just because you used to beat up all your neighbours doesn’t mean you have the right to do it all over again because you feel insecure or have a low self esteem. Times change, nations rise and fall. russians needs to accept that they are just one nation amongst many and there is nothing exceptional about them.

Putin has been emboldened in view of of the Manchurian President-Elect and the impending end of US aid for Ukraine. I fear that Trump will adopt a hands-off policy which will effectively give Putin the green light. What can/will the EU do if Ukraine refuses to settle and Putin is left with only one very nasty option. Putin is desperate and most likely facing death from inside Russia if he doesn't re-establish control and regain the upper hand. He's a genuine super villain with thousands of nuclear warheads. Infiltrating the US government might be the ultimate victory for his anti democracy campaign. Look at Trump's non-vetted pro-Russian proposed cabinet appointments. He's on a mission to destroy.....

Thanks. Excellent discussion.
Wise words from Ambassador Sullivan. The Russians have been at war with the 'west,' and especially the US, for many years. Destabilization is always the goal, whether in Europe, or the North America, or Central Africa. Putin has 'swarmed' not only embassies and missions with operatives, but perpetrates mass cyber and hybrid activities on critical infrastructure.

We in the West have been discussing support for Ukraine for almost 3 years. What is often forgotten in these discussions is the situation under international law. But this should be clear, especially to opponents of support: In an emergency session of the UN General Assembly on March 1, 2022, an internationally valid resolution was passed: Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is illegal under international law. Russia must end this war immediately and withdraw its troops. 141 countries voted for this resolution, 35 abstained. There were only 5 votes against (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria). With a 2/3 majority, this resolution is binding. After that, all countries no longer have to remain neutral but are actually obliged under international law to support the attacked state. This applies both legally and militarily. So what is the point of all these discussions? If we do not adhere to international law, we can forget about our future. This right is intended to prevent wars and ensure peaceful coexistence of all people on this planet. Greetings from Germany.

I have always been much more of a dove than a hawk, but if you read up on WW2 and takes a good look at how Hitler treated good-faith negotiations, you realize that some "leaders" only respond to strength. Putin is such a person. There is no getting around it. There are two options. You either stand up to him or he walks all over you. To him, being reasonable is being weak. There is no lie he won't tell and no accord he won't break when he feels he can get away with it. You don't negotiate with a guy like Putin. You contain him. That is certainly not to say you should provoke him. Just be firm in stating reasonable expectations, set a reasonable cost for violation of those expectations, and stick to your word if those expectations are violated. You won't have a good relationship with him, but if you project strength and set firm boundaries, you will have the least terrible relationship with him.
