Run both chips 24/7 for 3 years and the Xeon will still be running that's the difference in design over the i9, Workstations have a much better endurance design throughout hence the reason the PSU's are also high power Platinum standard in workstations, Very surprised Linus is not aware of this difference in design philosophy.

is it possible to install core i9 in motherboard with c422 chipset? there is no information on the web.
but it is known for sure that it is impossible to install Xeon W in the X299 motherboard.

I'm kind of confused about Intel's naming scheme with regard to this W series of Xeon CPU's- it seems that all of the Xeons that actually have good single core speeds are all only 16 to 20 PCIe lanes. Why is this? I'd be all over these chips if they had about 48 lanes minimum. I think gaming is both the best, and worst thing, to happen to the PC market. I don't know how people can live with so few PCIe lanes. Some of you who have a lot of hdd's, ssd's, 5.25" drives, external readers, GPU's, and etc, are being heavily bottlenecked by your lane configurations being oversaturated, split, and shared. Afaic, 16 to 24 lanes is incredibly greedy of the engineers when it would cost them nothing extra whatsoever to give us at least 48.

People don't make enough noise about this issue. The Intel Xeon W-1390P can boost to 5.3GHz, but again, only 20 PCIe lanes. Intel took what could have been a legendary processor, and ruined it. They could have charged double for the 1390-P with 64 PCIe lanes- I don't understand their thinking. They seem really dumb. They don't even make the CPU I most want to buy, and now Threadripper is priced into the stratosphere. I still love my 1920X system.

Buy these units all the time, they are AMAZING. I would buy these over a Ryzen processor any day. 525w power supply with more than enough juice for any GPU lol, even has a PCI-E Connector, and I believe its rated 80+ bronze as well. Xeon W's, can be upgraded to 30 dollar Xeon X's in the 56xx series which run GPU's at VERY HIGH FPS frame rates without bottlenecks. I love these units, and you can use it as a streaming PC with an extra GPU for nVENC streaming or an overpriced not needed Elgato capture card.

Why WS/Xeon vs Desktop i9, etc? simply the former is built for number crunching with bigger vector sizes auto-vectorization AVX-512, bigger CPU caches etc all these gearing towards Machine Learning, Data Mining, and will IMO benefit and beat the Desktop ones at gaming too. Check out the passmark benchmark comparisons between the two types. For me it is ideal to have a WS/Xeon and load it with non ECC memory ...

Workstations are so much more than just Xeon CPUs. When you buy one you are looking for a system that has been extensively tested for stability with certain applications, excellent OEM support and something that is designed for 24/7 operation. And these systems still happen to come with Xeons.

The main difference between the Xeon CPU's and the standard i9 is the amount of PCIE lanes, memory channels, and maximum memory support along with ECC and a couple other chip features for virtualization.

Will the xeon cpu's game? Ebay seller has a gaming rigg with a dual socket xeon motherboard. Each xeon has 6 -cores. Ram is 32 gigs eec. Seller claims the set-up will game good? He wants $329 with the set-up in a Thermaltake case and 1200 watt P.S.U.

I think the video is forgetting the main difference there could (and probably does) exist: the Xeon has been made to run reliably at high load 24/7 for weeks or months while that is not at all the purpose of Core i9. If it indeed can do that (and i9 cannot), it makes sense that it costs way more and is only for server/compute applications. Could be interesting to try to test for this.

This channel is such a waste. Why does this idiot loathe pro gear when he cant even understand what and who it is for?
The difference between xeon w and 2066 consumer is 64 pcie vs 44. Lower tdp (lower running cost, higher life of product and lower sound from cooling for desk workstations) these xeons r Handpicked cpus to get lower tdp on same boost freq. The motherboards for xeon often support dual u2 pcie 2.5 ssds and dual 10g ethernet. Find that on a gaming board u stupid idiot. Some companies can fill up 64 pcie lanes with multi gpu cards etc. Xeon always support vroc so u can pay for raid solutions keys with hhhl, m2 or u2 pcie. Xeons always have all vtd functionality, they r therefore quaranteed to work in shared workstations etc. They r aimed for proffesionals - and the price does affirm that. But there r features which r a must have too like ecc for financial applications, engineering work and cad etc. Not to mention all of the above. U still cant understand this, then like this idiot channel. Get affirmation that gaming gear is better than enterprise solutions. Sure linus. Great video.

doing some research into cost savings for our $3000 workstations at work. use a P4000 gpu, 32GB ECC RAM, and a W-2133 CPU. I just feel like we should go with Threadripper or even 2700X. do we really need ECC memory?

Performance is not the only consideration when considering a CPU. Reliability and durability is also important. The Xeon is designed as a server chip. It is designed to run 24/7 while the consumer i7 core cpus run for shorter periods each day. Just sayin' this review did not really prove much, except that as far as performance goes, it is a draw.

I have 2 Xeon 2630v3's on a dual socket mobo that i built in 2014, and from I see, for less money THEN, I still have just as many cores as the i9's now...
