CMOS timer still works and can wake your PC up if you tell it when to.
PCIe cards can definitely work, and do whatever they want. If there was a "downloading card", then it could surely do that.

Today I put my laptop to sleep mode and put the lid down. A couple of hours later I lifted the lid and found that microsoft was uploading stuff and was at the 35% completed stage. How could that be so when I left the laptop asleep with the lid down. They must have started it up somehow, and started uploading. But I didn't think that could be done with the lid down.

and the download time is 6 hours left

Somehow on my windows 10 PC, it updated windows in sleep. It no longer works on the internet. Maybe a reinstall a week after a clean install of windows might fix it.
