Why the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder is an awful desktop microphone

I don’t understand why you complain.

I've tried using mine to record narration during my video edits. If I record internally using the H1 and copy the file over, no problem, I can get a pretty good sound. However, recording directly into the editing software via USB sounds awful, whatever I do with the settings it just doesn't sound as sweet as recording internally. I can get the levels right, but the tone is rotten, sounding very wishy-washy and lacking in treble.

It´s a great recorder, I think it´s a bad desktop PC mic because it´s too sensitive, it records too much ambient as it´s not directional. It can record a needle hitting the ground, it records cars even far away...

There's 3 things here that can help. I have the Zoom h1 and yes it's not the best sounding mic but I wouldn't call it awful. The first thing is you need to bring it up close to you, sort of like a dynamic. Second, your space needs to be treated. Because just like any microphone, if your area isn't treated, the audio won't be up to par. Third, there is a way to enable interface mode wherein the controls can be adjusted in your DAW rather than on the device itself.

It's not a microphone, It's a field recorder which contains a mic array. That's like saying a rc drone is an awful desktop fan, you can set it to auto gain and remove the card.

Seems to be an outright biased opinion without any real review done. Anyone who's used the H1 knows that this is a great little versatile device. Sorry mate, but not a good video at all.

I just found out that the h1 can be used as a USB mic and I’ve been happy with it since I got it in 2010 🤣🤣

What are you talking about? The Zoom H1 or H1N is one of the best little mics and pieces of equipment I have. I use 3000$ mics, pro setups, phantom powered, USB mics, etc. Totally disagree with your review/feedback. -- Zoom H1 / H1N ... Highly recommended!!

You are dumb enough to complain about a killer recorder. Get a lav mic record to the card set the recorder to 58 gain 48/24bit
In a quiet room and boom best audio you ever had for less than 100 bucks.

I think the issue is between the chair and keyboard...: ) You just demonstrated - it has a less then a minute setup and amazing audio quality.

Easy to use and configure. And changing the sampling rate of the recording will not change the recorded frequency in the normal frequency range. Weird video.

Dislike from me. Absolutely love the H1. It’s a fantastic field recorder which you can also use as a USB desktop mic (but what a waste of its capabilities). Record a live band, or bird song! Use it standalone or attached to your favourite camera. Or connect one or two lavalier mics to the mic in while monitoring audio via the headphone jack.

Zoom h1 is portable recorder mic, using it wherever u will go and record it without a desktop, using it as mic interface at home is one of the double feature of h1 . Thumbs up for me,

And H1 also has built-in speaker works through USB. I don't know for what reason, actually.
