what I love about life science academic research is the relatively low pay, short term contracts and non-transferable skills. No other 'job' dumps you - unemployable in your 40s, into the unemployed masses, whilst you have such high qualifications. I have over 30 years life science research experience, bare in mind this 'advert' is exactly that. I would not advice anybody to even consider this as a 'career' as they will end up seriously disappointed. For anything related to human biology - I would suggest you need to become a clinician first THEN apply for grants. The wonderful thing is, and this is great, if you are a clinician in your consultancy training, those 3 years doing your PhD will count as part of your clinical training. Not only that you get paid more than the senior post doc who is supervising you. Don't believe me? You need to speak to some purse life science research scientists - none of them I know are happy.
