I saw Rollerball In the Capital theatre, Hamilton, Ont.

My dad would make jokes about getting points for certain targets on the road. Once i saw DR 2000, it was kinda funny. He was a firefighter, so thankfully, they were just jokes. Merry Christmas folks.

Side note: yes, fun violence in movies is a lost art. Im 48 and modern cinema (along with other media) is just pathetic.

Wish someone would make The Running Man per the original "Bachman" novel, great dark & bleak story.

Behind these blood sports are the society that creates them. Which in the direction we seem to be headed might make these movies look tame and quaint.

Running Man is basically a remake of the German tv-movie "Das Millionenspiel" (The million game) from 1970. It´s got the same premise, and when it was aired many people thought it was real and famously called the broadcasting station to offer their help in hunting down the contestant!.

The future was FAR more interesting in the past.

it didnt really occur to me until watching this that Battle Angel Alita is another take on Rollerball, where the prize is the promise of a better life via entry to the airship-style city where the wealthy live, if they defeat all the heavily robotically enhanced human-cyborg players. It has a great manga for those that didnt like the movie.

This genre is a favorite, all the way back to The Ninth Victim. But somehow the Hunger Games was a bit of a yawn. Big budget doesn't make up for participants really participating. I'd rather watch Deathrace 2000.
