Hiragana is one of the three Japanese writing systems, along with katakana and kanji. It is a phonetic alphabet, meaning that each character represents a single sound. Hiragana is used to write native Japanese words, grammatical elements, and furigana (small hiragana characters above kanji characters to indicate pronunciation).

Learning hiragana is the first step to learning Japanese. It is relatively easy to learn, and can be done in a few days or even weeks with dedicated study. Once you have learned hiragana, you will be able to read and write basic Japanese words and phrases, and you will have a foundation for learning katakana and kanji.
