this is really how to open up a game and introduce features

the sad thing about this is all the people fighting are innocent they were just commanded by the world leaders to fight to the death they never wanted this

I didn’t know anything about WW1 until I played this game. Man. The sheer loss of life due to tactical inflexibility is brutal. Especially Russia…

The best part about this game is that it’s so well made and cinematic that regular gameplay isn’t unlike the opening cutscene

That song has just stuck with since seeing that cutscene. I don’t know why. It feels like remembering a different life but ever so slightly. Just something about war and that song.

Can't read that sentence without without feeling disgust.

Battlefield 1 truly have some sort of sense of dread. Being within the trenches with the threat of close combat weaponry such as the flamethrower and gas. Being rushed by bayonets or blasted by shotguns. Still my favorite game ever.

This really was a powerful opening. I wish they kept this up, of where if you died you just went on to another soldier of the battle. But story purposes. Still, the single player would have had a FAR greater impact if they had kept this up throughout. That every time you died, someone wasn't coming home to their loved ones. No check points. No restarts. Just move on to the next soldier they sent charging at the machine gun nests. That would have really driven home the scale of it all, I think.

The only think this intro thought me is that, out of all the thousands of soldiers, a few of them can be a killing machine with a healing factor.

Arguably one of the best opening scenes in a videogame. Brutal, raw, terrifying. The white text on a black background punching home the fact that conflict still carries on, how this carnage changed nothing, and that you as a player are not expected to survive was jarring when you first started the game. The sound design, the art direction, the lack of a promenent HUD, and the reminder of the young age of each life cut short was unlike any FPS I could remember. Especially from a major studio. WW2 games saw you mow down untold number of enemy combatants, this scene reminded you that each life was a life cut short. "For King and Country" being barked at you as you kill fellow humans from a small viewport in a tank only for you to be blasted out of existence, mustard gas attacks, everything being a blur. One of my favorite anti-war simulators to date.

I think the most horrifying part of this sequence was with the tank gunner's death. How you could barely see his name when he was killed, possibly to represent how little their deaths meant in the overall conflict, and how their sacrifice was simply forgotten.

Not to mention how a good number of those you kill in this sequence had their backs turned to you, running away.

"so many of us thinking this war would be our rite of passage, our great adventure. Let me tell you, it was no adventure. Instead of adventure we found fear, and in war the only true equalizer is death." Bf1 reminds us that campaigns in a FPS game is not a fun adventure if you're in the shoes of that soldier, they perfectly captured the battlefield and immersed us with its horrifying scenes.

War is often necessary, and sometimes it even brings about genuinely good things. But the cruelest irony about WWI was that it was all for nothing.
All it accomplished was the rise of the Nazis and the Soviet Union, and paved the way for an even bloodier war that would be the ultimate laboratory of death...

Probably one of the greatest openings to any shooter I have seen in a long time.

Usually, there are scenes like this in other games that merely just flip the narrative up on its head in order for the player to continue playing along without dissonance. They are usually made out to be a one man army, and thus they feel they are because the game reinforces that fact.

Not here.

It's clear from the moment that you are thrown back into the flashback that you are not special. You are not the savior of mankind, you are not a super human, you are not the hero.

You are nobody.

You are just another soldier that is about to become a statistic in a field where millions of others share that same fate.

You are not expected to survive.
