It was so cool that he "overlooked" Swede's "mistake." That would have been a serious court martial offense but Gunny cut him some slack.

I remember I had made E4 in the navy and a few of us were standing around talking with a black gunnery sergeant when this young black recruit E1 walks up and says to Gunny "W'sup blood." BIG mistake. HUGE mistake. At that time the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon was a ways back but still a raw wound. Gunny had been in Lebanon when it happened and he was seriously injured along with our marine staff sergeant, crypto instructor who was also wounded but not as bad as Gunny. What he told that young man, I can't write in here because the liberals on YT have to "protect" the community from words. But I can tell you it was an ass chewin for the books. Even my ass was hurtin just from being close to it. Seriously though, I think Gunny was a good influence on that young man. He didn't tolerate the disrespect but he knew the kid just wanted to belong because he said to us that "If that kid wasn't here he'd be in a gang or dead." I believe he was right.

Never really understood the basis of this movie. Oh I get the tough, older guy trains the misfits for combat part, but these aren't regular Marines where being slackers would make some type of sense. These are recon Marines, a position you have to volunteer for and whose training is equivalent to US Army Rangers. Recon Marines are hard chargers from the get go, very motivated and very proud of their statis as the first in to combat.

Clint Eastwood is a class act.

The Actual size difference is approximately 2.5 inches and about 54 pounds. Clint's peak height was 6' 3.5" and he claimed to weigh 216 pounds in 1988. Pete "Swede" Koch was billed at 6' 6" and 270 pounds during his 1984-1989 NFL career. Clint is 32 years older than Swede. When this movie came out in 1986, Clint was 56 and Swede was 24.

Something about this movie never sat well with me. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but a couple of things just didn't jibe. As a former Navy man, I've served with many Marines, and NEVER have I met any who were as undisciplined as the RECON unit was when Gunny Highway first met them. NO MARINE would EVER be that disrespectful to a Gunnery Sargeant. And the part in this video? What was the plan here? Say that Suede HAD kicked Highway's ass. Did they seriously think there would be no consequences for the battery of an NCO? I mean, the whole lot of them would be spending a good amount of time in Leavenworth Prison. So, yeah... I loved this movie, but i don't think the portrayal of this particular group of Marines and their actions is anywhere close to accurate. Any Marines or Veteran Marines care to weigh in?

I also think this would have been a bit unrealistic. After all, The Marines is a voluntary branch of service. It did make for a good scene, though.

This is the type of man the U.S. needs as President. One who respects Women and Elderly Persons. Never hits a Woman. One who never needs Bodyguards to FIGHT his physical battles that do not involve guns. One of one combat with any evil bullies no holds barred.

I didnt noticr it until now but the idea of the movie was that rowdy characters arent evil. They arent bad. They just need a strong hand to guide them and teach them.

Caring about them isnt letting bad behaviours go but punishing it before you go out into the world. Hyper sensitivity has been horrific and soft parenting has hurt our recent generations.

A strong parent could have helped me learn as a kid what I learned on my own as an adult.

I LOVE IT!! He gained a friend too! Gunny HIGHWAY could have thrown Swede to the M.P's but instead, he said, Negative, Today You Become A Marine! YEEEEEAAAHH! BADASS BABY!! That is how it should be, boys and girls!! I met The Eastwood and got to spend about 6 hours w/ him and company some years ago. AMAZING!!!!!!
