30 years ago before Batman movies became a regular cinematic event you couldn’t miss, it was Tim Burton’s Batman that cemented the DC Comics character's place on the big screen. Before 1989’s Batman, the last Batman movie was Adam West’s 1966 TV spinoff parody version.

Burton’s Batman provided a darker tone to the Caped Crusader that was never seen before that time. Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker were great casting choices that produced a clash for the ages.

Batman’s movies have drastically evolved over the years thanks to advancements in film technology and special effects, but here’s how 1989’s Batman changed superhero movies.
